Wooster Cruises Past Transylvania, 6-0

Delaney Gross, Wooster field hockey WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster field hockey team overwhelmed Transylvania University from start to finish, and when all was said and done, the Fighting Scots capped a four-game homestand with a dominant 6-0 win over the Pioneers on Saturday afternoon at John P. Papp Stadium.

Wooster (3-5) struck early, with the first goal coming just 66 seconds into the game. A blocked shot that deflected off first-year Lizzie Hardy's stick made its way to classmate Natalie Katzenmeyer at the post, and the forward beat a Transylvania (3-4) defender for the game's first goal. Wooster tripled its lead before the first period ended, with junior Delaney Gross, then Katzenmeyer, cleaning up in front of the cage for a pair of rebound goals. Gross' goal mark the first of the junior's career.

First-year Mary Johnson scored for the third time over the last five games in the 26th minute. Junior Olivia Nengel found Johnson near the front of the cage, and the forward upped the team-lead in scoring to four. Johnson turned into the helper on the next goal, when the Scots beat Libby Bringard's bid to knock away an entry pass. Junior Maddie Peek was well-positioned to get a deflection shot past Bringard, as Wooster's lead ballooned to 5-0 at the half.

Senior Lucy Agurkis found Nengel in the middle following Wooster's 20th penalty corner of the game, and the junior capped the scoring in the 60th minute.

Wooster did not allow a shot until the fourth period, and flat-out dominated the game, 41-2. Bringard's efforts kept the score from growing even more, as the Pioneers' 'keeper logged 17 saves.

First-year Cate Barkdoll went the distance in goal for Wooster for collegiate clean-sheet No. 1.

Of note, the shutout marked the first for the Scots since Wooster blanked Oberlin College 6-0 on October 22, 2021.

Next, Wooster is off to Wittenberg University (3-4) for a 6 p.m. game on Friday, September 30. The contest is the programs' conference lid-lifter.
