Tigers Hold Off Scots, 1-0, in NCAC Opener

Cate Barkdoll, Wooster field hockey SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – Wittenberg University fended off The College of Wooster's attempt at a game-tying goal in the final 65 seconds of the Tigers' 1-0 win over the Fighting Scots on Friday evening at Edwards-Maurer Field.

Wittenberg (4-4, 1-0 North Coast Athletic Conference) goalkeeper Emma Hurguy stopped Wooster (3-6, 0-1 NCAC) junior Maddie Peek with about 62 seconds remaining in the conference opener. Peek's earlier bid at a game-tying score did not get past back Caroline Ford, who made a defensive save in the opening minutes of the final period.

Wittenberg's Caroline Cairns broke up the scoreless tie 5:33 into the third period.

Earlier, the Tigers really threatened when Meredith Johnson inserted a penalty corner in the sixth minute. Wittenberg peppered Wooster first-year Cate Barkdoll with three shots in about a 10-second span, and the Fighting Scots' 'keeper turned all three away. A fourth shot in a 15-tick span was blocked on its way towards the cage.

Wooster's first big threat came in the 19th minute, when the Scots were awarded their lone penalty corner of the game. Peek followed up a shot that was blocked with a rebound attempt that was saved by Wittenberg's Caitlin Archdeacon.

Barkdoll finished with nine saves, while Archdeacon and Hurguy combined for four on Wittenberg's side.

Wittenberg outshot Wooster 16-6 and finished with 12 penalty corners.

Wooster's season continues with an 11 a.m. home contest against Marian University (Wisconsin) (3-2) on October 2.
