Scots Drop Tilt with League-Leading Tigers

Mary Johnson, Wooster field hockey WOOSTER, Ohio – DePauw University's Hailey Nowak's redirecting skills were immaculate, and that was the difference on Sunday afternoon in the Tigers' 2-0 win over The College of Wooster field hockey team at John P. Papp Stadium.

Nowak, DePauw's (7-4, 3-0 North Coast Athletic Conference) penalty corner inserter, scored both of the goals in the contest off corner plays. On the first, Tiala Ortega played a ball to just in front of the cage where Nowak chipped it over Wooster senior 'keeper Zoë Semersky's pads in the 12th minute. In the 56th minute, a cross to the post found its way to an uncovered Nowak, who tapped in her tri-team-leading third goal of the year.

Wooster's (4-8, 1-2 NCAC) best chance at an equalizer came in the 52nd minute. First-year Mary Johnson was in position in front of the cage and fired off two successive shot attempts. DePauw's Scarlett Oaks stopped the second, which was the lone save of the day for the Tigers.

Wooster outshot DePauw 5-4 over the final 15 minutes of action, but for the game, the Tigers more than doubled up the Scots, 18-8. DePauw finished with eight penalty corners to Wooster's three, while Semersky made five saves on the afternoon.

Wooster's second four-game homestand of the year concludes when Washington & Jefferson College visits for a 7 p.m. game on Wednesday, October 12. The game is the final non-conference contest of the year for the Scots.
