Scots Stopped in Granville

Ashley Reynolds, Wooster field hockey GRANVILLE, Ohio – Host Denison University scored just before halftime, then added a second-half insurance goal during a 2-0 win over the visiting College of Wooster field hockey team on Saturday morning at Deeds Field-Piper Stadium.

Denison (8-4, 3-1 North Coast Athletic Conference) midfielder Madeleine Hunt netted her second game-winning goal against Wooster (5-9, 1-3 NCAC) this year. Hunt, who scored the golden-goal in the Big Red's 1-0 double-overtime victory on Black & Gold Weekend, saw her initial shot blocked with just north of a minute remaining in the second period on Saturday. The Big Red senior stuck with the play, tracked down the rebound, then spun and scored from about six yards out.

On the second goal, Grace Lock navigated through several Wooster defenders until getting just inside the circle. From there, Lock ripped off a shot the caromed into the lower left corner of the cage in the 35th minute.

Earlier, Wooster warded off six first-period Denison penalty corners, during which the Big Red fired off just one shot. Scots' senior Zoë Semersky came up with the first of her six saves in the sixth minute. Wooster earned its first penalty corner of the day in the 14th minute.

Big scoring chances, a similar theme to when a fantastic defensive effort enabled Wooster to take Denison to double overtime on Black & Gold Weekend, were hard to come by for the Scots. Wooster first-year Mary Johnson fired off both shots, with those coming in the fourth period.

The Big Red outshot the Scots 13-2 and had a 12-1 margin in corners.

Next, Wooster hosts Concordia University Wisconsin (5-5) at noon on Sunday, October 16. Prior to the game, Wooster will recognize its five seniors – Lucy Agurkis, Clare Leithauser, Jill Murray, Lucy Segal, and Semersky.
