Peek the Hero in Wooster's Latest Overtime Win

Maddie Peek, Wooster field hockey WOOSTER, Ohio – Junior Maddie Peek capped an afternoon of close calls and just misses with an overtime game-winner to give The College of Wooster field hockey team a 1-0 victory over Concordia University Wisconsin on Sunday afternoon at John P. Papp Stadium.

Wooster (6-9), which scored its second overtime victory in a five-day span, saw first-year Mary Johnson play the ball ahead to Peek, who was one-on-one with Concordia (5-6) goalkeeper Emily Binley in the 68th minute. Peek beat a charging Binley to the ball, and that left the Falcons' cage unguarded. The Scots' junior simply took on Binley in a foot race to gain enough space to deposit the winner into the undefended goal.

Three minutes earlier, Wooster had a two-on-goalie fastbreak chance. Johnson redirected the feed only to have it clang off the post. The Scots again applied pressure in the 66th minute, with Binley coming out to break up a fastbreak chance.

Wooster dominated the scoring chances in an offensive-minded game, which featured a combined 44 shots and 31 penalty corners. Johnson was left alone about 10 yards from the cage in the third period and ripped a shot that hit square off the post. In the first period, Wooster was in the right positions, but so were Concordia's defenders, who came up with three defensive saves during a seven-shot, four-corner frenzy that took place in a 46-second span.

Concordia's first shot on goal came in the 12th minute, and Wooster senior Zoë Semersky came up with the save. Classmate Lucy Segal played the fourth period on "senior day" and logged the Scots' other save of the day. One of Wooster's other key defensive plays came just before halftime when senior Clare Leithauser came charging out from the end line to intercept a corner entry.

Wooster outshot Concordia 27-17, had a 16-2 lead on shots on goal, and edged out the Falcons 16-15 on corners. Binley kept the Falcons in the game with 11 saves, while Abby McGue had two of the four defensive saves.

Next, Ohio Wesleyan University (11-2, 4-1 NCAC) is in town for a 7 p.m. game on Wednesday, October 19.
