Scots Wrap Up Home Slate

Olivia Nengel, Wooster field hockey WOOSTER, Ohio – Junior Delaney Gross and first-year Lizzie Hardy pulled The College of Wooster field hockey team even with visiting Allegheny College, but the Gators' Molly Miller deflected in a ball that was played to the cage following a rebound for the deciding goal in the guests' 3-2 win over the Fighting Scots on Wednesday evening at John P. Papp Stadium.

Gross tied the game at one in the 13th minute. The junior cleaned up a shot by first-year Mary Johnson that was stopped by Allegheny's (13-4, 4-3 NCAC) Hallie Reiger for goal two on the year. The opening score also came on a rebound, with Emily Robles following up a Bella Cowen shot that was saved by Wooster (6-12, 1-6 NCAC) first-year Cate Barkdoll in the sixth minute.

Kelsey Anderson pushed Allegheny ahead with a goal in the 35th minute. She finished a shot in front of the cage following a pass from Cowen. Wooster wasted no time answering back, needing just :43 for the equalizer. Reiger charged out from the cage in an effort to challenge Johnson and cut off a path to the goal. The Scots' first-year forward pushed the ball ahead, where it was collected by Hardy, who scored on the empty-cage chance.

Less than six minutes later, Hannah Sharp followed her shot that was stopped by Barkdoll by pushed a ball that would have gone into the cage, except for Miller made sure it was on point with an open deflection just inside the post.

Wooster nearly had a fast-break chance in the last nine minutes of the game. However, the Scots were unable to time up the lead pass, and that led to Reiger knocking it out of harm's way. The Scots had one final chance in the last 20 seconds with a penalty corner, but could not get a shot off.

Barkdoll's six saves were three off a season-high, and the Scots made seven saves overall, thanks to junior Olivia Nengel's defensive one in the final two minutes of the first period. Reiger made one save on the night for Allegheny.

The Gators outshot the Scots 18-4 and had a 12-2 lead on corners.

Next, Wooster concludes its season with a noon game at Oberlin College (4-11, 1-6 NCAC) on Saturday, October 29.
