Defense, Katzenmeyer Take Care of Sweet Briar, 1-0

Natalie Katzenmeyer, Wooster Field Hockey SWEET BRIAR, Va. – Sophomore Natalie Katzenmeyer's seventh collegiate goal broke a scoreless tie in the fourth period, and The College of Wooster field hockey team held strong down the stretch to post its second shutout of the year with Saturday's 1-0 win over host Sweet Briar College.

Senior Maddie Peek played the ball in to classmate Delaney Gross on the scoring play, and the Fighting Scots' midfielder found Katzenmeyer, who had a step on a Vixen defender. Katzenmeyer nicely tucked away the decisive goal between the 'keeper's blocker and the post in the 49th minute. The score marked Katzenmeyer's third of the season and the sophomore is one shy of matching a collegiate high just three games into the season.

Sweet Briar upped the intensity in search of an equalizer with three penalty corners and two shots after Katzenmeyer's score. Wooster sophomore Cate Barkdoll turned away one Sweet Briar shot down the stretch and ended the game with two saves.

Wooster threatened late for some insurance, earning two corners in the final three minutes. Peek fired off a shot on the second one, which was saved by the Vixens' Ashley Maggiora.

Shots for the game were even at eight apiece. Sweet Briar nearly doubled up Wooster 9-5 on penalty corners, but the Vixens struggled to get chances on target, with just two of the eight shots going on the game log as saves.

Wooster moved to 2-1 on the year, while Sweet Briar fell to 2-3.

Wooster (0-1 North Coast Athletic Conference) returns to the field on Saturday, September 23 with a noon road contest at DePauw University (3-3, 1-0 NCAC).
