Scots Win Thriller After Shootout

Cate Barkdoll The College of Wooster field hockey team picked up a big North Coast Athletic Conference win on Saturday over Washington and Jefferson College, winning 1-0 after surviving a shootout.

Both teams failed to score during regulation and during both 10-minute overtime periods to force the shootout.

In the shootout, senior Olivia Nengel took the first attempt but failed as Washington and Jefferson took advantage on its second try to go up 1-0.

Wooster would not connect until its fourth attempt as sophomore Mary Johnson tied it up to put pressure on the Presidents.

Sophomore keeper Cate Barkdoll was up to the task, not allowing another goal to cross for the remainder of the shootout - stopping five of the six chances.

In Wooster sixth attempt, Nengel succeeded in her next opportunity, while Barkdoll's final stop sealed the win.

Wooster held possession for much of the game, but they just could not find a prime scoring opportunity. Sophomore Lizzie Hardy gave the Scots its best attempt with 5:25 left in the second quarter, but her shot went wide with the goalie on the ground.

The Scots outshot the Presidents 9-4. Barkdoll needed just one save, while her counterpart Anastasia Godat collected four.

Wooster moves to 4-2 overall and 2-2 in the NCAC with the win. Washington and Jefferson falls to 4-5 and 3-2 in NCAC games.

Wooster will return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Kenyon College.
