Beckerman Scores First Collegiate Goal at Kenyon

Joey Beckerman, Wooster Field Hockey GAMBIER, Ohio – Sophomore Joey Beckerman scored for the first time as a Fighting Scot during The College of Wooster's 3-1 loss at Kenyon College on Tuesday afternoon at the Field at Benson Bowl.

Beckerman tied the North Coast Athletic Conference clash at one in the seventh minute, capitalizing on a Kenyon (5-6, 2-3 NCAC) misplay. The Owls inserted from the defensive sideline and looked to flip sides of the field. A Kenyon back was not able to control a swing pass, enabling Beckerman to beat out Kenyon goalkeeper Megan Lydon for the ball. Beckerman tapped the ball past Lydon's extended stick and had an open cage to finish off the first collegiate goal.

Kenyon scored minutes into the contest, with Hannah Paprotna netting goal seven of the year. Grace Lane followed with goal seven in the 19th minute. Lane worked the ball through a pair of Wooster (4-3, 2-3 NCAC) penalty corner defenders and blasted a one-timer from the right wing to the far post that went in. Kenyon's Ella Haskins made it a 3-1 game seconds before halftime, winning a two-on-two battle on a ball played into the middle from well outside the circle. After gaining possession, Haskins spun and scored from the backside.

One of Wooster's top second-half scoring chances came with a touch over five minutes to go in the third period. Beckerman and sophomore Lizzie Hardy's double team earned the Scots possession. Hardy worked the ball to first-year Audrey McKenna, who shielded the Owls before getting off a shot that was saved by Lydon. Later, Wooster had the advantage in transition with 25 seconds remaining in the afternoon affair. Senior Delaney Gross gained possession and fed the ball up to sophomore Mary Johnson, whose one-on-'keeper shot was turned away by Lydon.

Kenyon finished with a 14-5 lead on shots, while the Owls had all eight penalty corners in the game. Sophomore Cate Barkdoll and Lyon had three saves apiece.

Next, Wooster heads to Oberlin College (1-7) for a 12 p.m. game on Sunday, October 8. The Sunday contest is a non-conference battle as the teams meet up again at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 14 at John P. Papp Stadium, with that contest being the official conference game for the 2023 season.
