Wooster Overmatches Oberlin, 4-0

Olivia Nengel, Wooster Field Hockey OBERLIN, Ohio – The College of Wooster field hockey team put on an offensive clinic on Sunday afternoon, downing host Oberlin College 4-0 in non-conference action at the Austin E. Knowlton Athletics Complex.

Sophomore Lizzie Hardy scored twice for her second multi-goal game of the year, and the midfielder helped set up Wooster's (5-3) final goal of the afternoon. On the first goal, Hardy spun just shy of the 30-yard line and passed the ball ahead to senior Maddie Peek. Peek possessed the ball into the circle, drawing the attention of every Yeowomen (1-9) back and midfielder in the vicinity. That left a trailing Hardy unmarked, and Peek was on the money with a cross, and the sophomore buried the shot into the lower right side of the cage for the day's first goal in the 16th minute.

Hardy took the ball away from an Oberlin player looking to clear in the 23rd minute. She promptly lifted goal four of the year over Oberlin's 'keeper, and that tally doubled the Fighting Scots' cushion.

Wooster scored twice in a 29-second span in the third period. Peek received a corner insert from senior Ciara O'Connor and crossed the ball to classmate Olivia Nengel, who was positioned just inside the circle at the top. Nengel's long-range score marked goal one of the year. Next, Hardy played a ball in to senior Delaney Gross, who passed it along to a cutting Peek, who finished in front of the cage for goal one of the season.

Wooster held Oberlin shotless, marking the first time an opponent has not had a shot in a game this season, and it is the third time the Scots have allowed two or fewer shots. Sophomore Cate Barkdoll and first-years Brooke Benjamin and Nono Kaufman all saw action in goal.

Of note, all five of Wooster's wins this season have been shutouts.

Wooster logged 28 shots and earned 13 penalty corners in the game. Leila Burki and Janny McCormick combined for eight saves, while Meaghan Kramer had two of the Yeowomen's three defensive saves.

Next, Wooster (2-3 North Coast Athletic Conference) heads to Allegheny College (4-8, 2-5 NCAC) for a 7 p.m. contest on Wednesday, October 11.
