Scots Blank Gators, 1-0

Audrey McKenna, Wooster Field Hockey MEADVILLE, Pennsylvania – The College of Wooster field hockey team's run of only winning via shutouts continued on Wednesday evening, with the Fighting Scots blanking host Allegheny College 1-0 on the Robertson Blue Turf.

Wooster scored its sixth win (6-3) of the season and evened its North Coast Athletic Conference record at 3-3. Through nine games, Wooster has only allowed five goals, and the Scots entered the day with the fifth-highest shutout percentage and sixth-lowest goals-against average in NCAA Div. III. Individually, sophomore Cate Barkdoll sported the ninth-best goals-against average nationally.

Wooster's goal came from a redirect off the stick of sophomore Mary Johnson in the 39th minute. First-year Audrey McKenna gained possession of a penalty corner insert and worked the ball to senior Delaney Gross at the top. Gross swept the ball towards the cage, where Johnson finished to move into a tie with classmate Lizzie Hardy for the team lead in goals at four.

Hardy nearly doubled Wooster's lead with about 9:00 remaining in the game. The sophomore had a one-on-one chance with Allegheny's (4-9, 2-6 NCAC) 'keeper, but could not get the shot tucked around the pads.

Wooster finished with 11 shots on the night. The Scots had four corners, while the Gators' Meredythe Baird ended the conference clash with four saves.

Wooster again did not allow a shot, marking the second straight game holding an opponent shotless.

Next, Oberlin College (1-9, 1-5 NCAC) visits John P. Papp Stadium for an 11 a.m. contest on Saturday, October 14. The teams just met up on Sunday in non-conference action, with the Scots winning 4-0.
