Wooster Puts on Clinic, Routs Oberlin, 8-0

Maddie Peek, Wooster Field Hockey WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster field hockey team scored in bunches, hanging three goals on visiting Oberlin College in the second period and four in the fourth, while the Fighting Scots did not allow a shot for the third straight game in Saturday's 8-0 rout of the Yeowomen at John P. Papp Stadium.

Wooster (7-3, 4-3 North Coast Athletic Conference), which had its seventh shutout of the year, scored the most goals since the Scots poured in nine against Transylvania University in a 2018 non-conference meeting. Senior Maddie Peek's power from the wings overmatched Oberlin (1-10, 1-6 NCAC), with the midfielder scoring three times on one-timers following penalty corner inserts. Those goals made it 1-0, 4-0, and 5-0, with the senior's hat trick going down in the game log in the 46th minute. Senior Ciara O'Connor's assists on the corners marked Wooster's first three-assist game since alumna Katie Agatucci's against Concordia University Wisconsin in 2019. Only four-time All-American and W Association Hall of Famer Amanda Artman ranks above O'Connor on the program's single-game assists leaderboard.

Peek's career day ended with seven points. She crossed a pass that sophomore Lizzie Hardy hit in for goal six of the season in the 22nd minute. The goal was the second by Hardy in a span of just over two minutes. The sophomore forward pushed across a rebound that made it 2-0 in the 21st minute.

Sophomore Mary Johnson joined the scoring group in the 49th minute. The back's fifth goal of the season came following yet another corner. Senior Olivia Nengel blasted a shot that was on target from just inside the circle that Johnson deflected in.

Later, senior Delaney Gross and first-year Naledi Jani scored for the first time this season, with Jani's goal marking collegiate score number one. Gross hit in a ball that was played sideways deep in the defensive end by an Oberlin back. Jandi knocked in a ball that was chipped into the air by Johnson.

Sophomore Cate Barkdoll played the first 37 minutes in goal, while first-year Nono Kaufman went the rest of the way.

Janny McCormick had seven saves to lead Oberlin. Leila Burki followed with two, and the Yeowomen had two defensive saves.

Wooster outshot Oberlin 27-0 and had 15 penalty corners to the Yeowomen's zero.

Next, Wooster hosts Transylvania, now an affiliate member of the NCAC in field hockey. The game takes place on Saturday, October 21 at noon. The Pioneers are 4-10, 0-6 NCAC on the year.
