Sophomores Pack the Scoring Punch, as Wooster Celebrates Seniors with 5-1 Win Over Transy

Delaney Gross, Olivia Nengel, Ciara O'Connor, Maddie Peek, Wooster Field Hockey WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster field hockey team blitzed Transylvania University at the onset, scoring three times in the opening 5:49, and the Fighting Scots celebrated the program's four seniors with a highlight-packed 5-1 win over the Pioneers on Saturday afternoon at John P. Papp Stadium.

Wooster (8-3, 5-3 North Coast Athletic Conference) sophomore Mary Johnson hung three goals on Transylvania (4-11, 0-7 NCAC), starting with a deflection on a ball played in from senior Maddie Peek in the game's fifth minute that made it 2-0. Johnson's stick work in the 20th minute made it 4-0. On the play, the back, who helps on the offensive end on corners, played a cross from Peek up into the air, and the shot sailed above Pioneer 'keeper Libby Bringard. Johnson beat Bringard again, this time in the 43rd minute, cleaning up a ball that was not possessed in front of the goal. Johnson's final score extended Wooster's lead to 5-0.

Transylvania threatened to end a pair of remarkable Wooster defensive runs late in the opening period. Johnson did not let that happen, clearing the ball to the sideline in the 14th minute after the Pioneers' Caroline Seaward played a developing breakaway chance too far ahead. Transylvania did score with 3:02 remaining in the contest, denying Wooster its bid for a fourth consecutive shutout for the first time since 1986. The goal ended Wooster's impressive run of 267:09 of game action not allowing a goal, while earlier in the game, the Scots log of not allowing a shot ended just shy of 227 minutes.

Elsewhere, sophomore Lizzie Hardy upped the team lead in goals to eight, putting home a rebound in the second minute and hitting in a pass to the post from senior Ciara O'Connor just before the game's sixth minute. Johnson joined Hardy at eight goals on the year by game's end.

Sophomore Cate Barkdoll finished with two saves.

Wooster outshot Transylvania 22-3 and had 14 corners to the Pioneers' two.

Transylvania is just the fourth team to score on Wooster this fall.

Next, Wooster hosts Wittenberg University (9-6, 4-4 NCAC) at noon on Sunday, October 22.
