Cox-Holloway Logs First Double-Double Against Wabash

Jaiden Cox-Holloway, Wooster Basketball WOOSTER, Ohio – Sophomore Jaiden Cox-Holloway added five blocked shots to his first collegiate double-double, while turnovers continued to be The College of Wooster men's basketball team's downfall, as Wabash College won 78-64 on Saturday afternoon at Timken Gymnasium.

Cox-Holloway established an imposing presence at the rim on the game's fourth possession, denying Wabash's (8-7, 4-2 North Coast Athletic Conference) Avery Beaver. Vinny Buccilla was the next Little Giant to get a shot swatted aside by Wooster's (6-8, 2-3 NCAC) 6-6 forward, and that block came at the first half's 7:46 mark. Six seconds later, Nate Matelic faced the same fate going up against Cox-Holloway, who then went down to the other end of the floor to connect on a triple that had Wooster up 17-12 at the 7:31 mark.

Buccilla was denied by Cox-Holloway a second time seconds into the second half. The final Wooster block of the day came when Wabash's Sam Comer attempted a turnaround jumper from about six feet out at the second stanza's 6:16 mark.

Ahmoni Jones took over for Wabash in the second half, scoring eight points in a span of 1:28. Those came during Wabash's 12-4 run, during which the Little Giants emerged with a 49-41 lead. Wooster's best stretch in the second half started with senior JJ Cline knocking down a three-pointer that had Wooster within 49-44 with 11:27 to go. Next, junior Jamir Billings knocked the ball away from Comer and scored on a fast-break layup. Wabash regrouped and countered with a 10-2 run and maintained a double-digit lead for all but a short stretch for the remainder of the NCAC clash.

Wooster started strong, leading 8-2 at the first half's 15:22 mark. A fast-break layup from junior Ashton Price following Cline's second steal in the opening 4:30 gave the Scots the six-point cushion. A possession prior, Cline deflected the ball away from Gavin Schippert and that led to a fast-break Cox-Holloway dunk.

Outside of the aforementioned steals, Wabash had just two turnovers, and had 14 fewer than Wooster's count for the game. That enabled Wabash to lead 20-8 on points off turnovers.

Cox-Holloway's double-double consisted of a career-high 12 rebounds and 11 points. The sophomore was 4-of-6 from the floor and has eight blocked shots over the last three games. Billings led all Wooster players with 15 points. Price finished at 12 points, while Billings and Cline secured seven rebounds each.

Wooster shot 44.4 percent (24-of-54) from the floor and had 39 rebounds to Wabash's 34.

Jones led all players with 24 points, and his eight rebounds were tops among the Little Giants. Comer provided a big spark off the bench with 13 points and six assists.

Wabash checked in at 40.6 percent (26-of-64) from the floor for the game and went 14-of-17 at the free throw line.

Next, Wooster heads to Hiram College (2-11, 0-4 NCAC) for a 7 p.m. game on Wednesday, Jan. 10. Hiram's game against DePauw University was still in progress at posting time.
