Men's Golf Captures First-Place at Noteworthy-Filled Gatorade Collegiate

Wooster Men's Golf Team DOVER, Ohio – A monumental weekend was turned in by The College of Wooster men's golf team, which won the program's Gatorade Collegiate for the first time in the eight-year history of the event. The Fighting Scots shot a 294 on Saturday at the par-72, 6,733-yard Zoar Village Golf Course, and bettered that with a 293 on Sunday to finish at 587, six strokes clear of runner-up Baldwin Wallace University.

Big noteworthy feats were found throughout the lineup, starting with sophomore Krish Nayak, playing as Wooster's No. 1. Nayak became just the second Scot since at least 1990 to finish a 36-hole tournament under par, thanks to a 4-under 68 on Sunday. Nayak posted an even-par 72 over the opening 18 holes of the year on his way to a 140 for the weekend. The business economics major won the medalist tiebreaker over Baldwin Wallace's Henry Neumann.

Nayak was electric on Sunday over the closing stretch of each nine, carding birdies on holes eight and nine, and again on 17 and 18. Nayak had four birdies on the card on Sunday's back-nine, with the others coming on the par-4, 446-yard 10th hole and the par-5, 545-yard 12th hole.

Of note, Nayak is the first Scot to shoot under par for a 36-hole tournament since alumnus Marcus Carano logged a 1-under-par 143 at the 2015 Nye Intercollegiate/North Coast Athletic Conference Preview, which was held at Wooster Country Club. Nayak's 68 is tied for the fourth-lowest round in program history for tournaments scores are available for in College archives.

First-years Gabe Guthrie and Mark Towns secured top-10 finishes in their collegiate debuts. Guthrie closed with a 1-over-par 73 on Sunday, a three-stroke improvement over his opening collegiate round. He tied for seventh-place at 149. Towns' career started with fireworks, as he carded back-to-back birdies on holes six and seven on Saturday en route to making his first collegiate turn at 2-under-par. Towns finished the day at 2-under-par becoming just the second first-year during Rich Danch's 27-year run as head coach to debut with an under-par round. Towns went on to tie for ninth-place at 150.

Four scorers in the 70s on each day enabled Wooster to stay ahead of Baldwin Wallace. Junior David Dennis provided steady contributions to the lineup, shooting 76-78-154, which was the 19th-best score in the field. Sophomore Noah Jackman's 74 counted towards the victory on Sunday, and he tied for 16th-place at 153. Jackman opened the year with a 79.

Eight other Scots competed as individuals in the event. Junior Jacob Ullom led that contingent with an even-par 144. Ullom shot a collegiate-best 1-under-par 71 on Sunday.

Next, Wooster competes at Baldwin Wallace's Fall Invitational on Saturday, September 10 at Pine Hills Golf Club in Hinckley, Ohio.
