Wooster's Strong Fall Continues, as Scots Runner-Up at Region V Preview

James Jiang, Wooster Golf NASHPORT, Ohio – The College of Wooster men's golf team overtook Otterbein University and was the mid-round leader before the Cardinals rallied back to top the Fighting Scots at the NCAA Div. III Region V Preview, which took place the last two days at the par-72, 6,766-yard Virtues Golf Club. Wooster's 637 was the runner-up score in the 15-team field, which included a pair of 2022 NCAA Div. III Championships qualifiers that both came in behind the Scots.

Wooster, which logged its fourth top-three finish in as many events this fall, entered Tuesday's final round three strokes behind Otterbein. The Scots soared ahead near the turn before the Cardinals stormed back for the 10-stroke victory.

Sophomore Krish Nayak signed for a 154, which placed him in a tie for third-place. Nayak opened with a 79 on Monday and closed with a 3-over-par 75 on Tuesday on the strength of four birdies. Two of those came on the front nine, which Nayak played at even-par in the final round.

First-year Gabe Guthrie's impressive debut fall continued with an 11th-place finish in the 95-competitor field. He gained some momentum with an eagle on the par-5, 546-yard seventh hole on Monday before going on to play the back-nine at 1-over-par with birdies on the par-5, 510-yard 10th hole and the par-4, 390-yard 17th hole. Guthrie checked in at 158 for the event.

First-year James Jiang finished just outside the top-20 at 162. He posted a pair of 81s after two birdies and 17 pars on the week. Jiang was 3-over-par at the turn both days and carded an early birdie in both rounds.

Junior Tyler Hilbert was next at 163, which was tied for the 27th-best score in the field. He had the best score on the team on Monday at 78, fueled by eight pars and just one bogey on the back-nine. Of note, Hilbert played the final 13 holes on Monday at even-par.

First-year Mark Towns (92-86-178) rounded out the lineup, while junior David Dennis (85-79-164) had a solid week as an individual.

Trine University's Mark Civanich was the medalist at 151.

Wooster's fall wraps up at the Bluffton University Beaver Fall Classic, which takes place October 15-16 at Bluffton Golf Club.
