Wooster Comes Up Short in Title Defense

Mark Towns, Wooster Golf LIMA, Ohio – The College of Wooster men's golf team was unable to defend its title at Bluffton University's Spring Invitational, as the Fighting Scots finished in a tie for sixth-place in the 10-team field. Wooster shot a 311 in the weather-shortened event.

First-year Mark Towns' 2-over-par 74 led the Fighting Scots, and that score ranked as the sixth-best on the day. Towns opened with a birdie on the par-4, 395-yard first hole at the par-72, 6,810-yard Hidden Creek Golf Club, and he was 2-under-par after four holes, thanks to sinking a birdie on the par-5, 485-yard fourth hole. Towns had three birdies in the cards, netting his final one on the par-5, 490-yard 10th hole. Towns made the turn at even par and had 14 holes at par or better.

Classmate Gabe Guthrie followed at 75, which placed him in a tie for 12th-place. Guthrie logged a very steady stretch, starting with hole six, as he did not drop a stroke from that point until the 17th hole. Guthrie birdied the par-5, 530-yard 16th hole to get back to 1-over-par, and he played the par-5 holes at 1-under par on the day.

Sophomore Noah Jackman signed for a 79, the 32nd-best score in the field. Jackman played 10 holes at par or better, and his round was headlined by a birdie on the par-5, 515-yard eighth hole.

All five Scots who competed had at least one birdie on the day. Sophomore Krish Nayak's came early, as he rolled one in on the par-3, 200-yard second hole, while junior Tyler Hilbert sank his birdie on the fourth hole. Hilbert shot an 83 to tie for 42nd-place and Nayak was a stroke back, which placed the sophomore in a tie for 45th-place.

Adrian College's 296 was the top score, as was the Bulldogs' Hendrick de Koning's 69 when it came to the race for medalist.

Wooster is back in action on Monday, April 10, when the Scots hit the road for the Muskingum University Spring Invitational, which will actually be held closer to Wooster's campus, with the event set to take place at Fox Meadow Country Club in Medina, Ohio.
