Carey Leads Scots on Day One of NCAC Championships

Andrew Carey, Wooster Golf WESTFIELD CENTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster men's golf team will be looking to charge up the leaderboard after ending day one of the North Coast Athletic Conference Championships tied for sixth-place. The NCAC Championships run through Sunday at Westfield Country Club's North Course.

First-year Andrew Carey's 2-over-par 72 led the Fighting Scots, and that score is tied for 13th-place. Carey, and the men, started on the back nine of the par-70, 6,646-yard North Course, and the first-year turned at 1-over-par. He rolled in a birdie on the par-4, 408-yard 12th hole and went on to play holes 12 through 18 at 1-under-par with six straight pars following the birdie. Carey played seven of the nine holes on the front nine at par or better, capping his round with a birdie on the par-4, 424-yard ninth hole.

Senior Jacob Ullom, a returning first-team All-NCAC performer, continued to play well at Westfield, firing a 4-over-par 74. Ullom, who is tied for 23rd-place, was 1-over-par at the turn, thanks to birdies on two of the back nine's par-5 holes. The second of those came at the daunting 604-yard 18th hole. That birdie was followed with six pars over a seven-hole stretch.

Senior Tyler Hilbert signed for a 76, which is the 32nd-place score. Hilbert rolled in birdies on the par-5, 552-yard 14th hole and the par-4, 332-yard fifth hole. Hilbert played the last seven holes of his round at even par and played 12 holes at par or better.

Sophomore Gabe Guthrie's 78 rounded out Wooster's scorers. Guthrie is tied for 33rd-place with two rounds remaining. Guthrie's day started strong with three straight pars at the onset, and the sophomore found consistency late and will be looking to carry that into play on Saturday, as five straight pars ended the round.

Junior Krish Nayak was Wooster's No. 5 with an 80. Nayak fired off eight straight pars once turning to the front nine on Friday and finished at 1-over-par for that nine-hole stretch.

Kenyon College and Wabash College are tied for first-place after opening-day 280s, the even-par score. Individually, Wittenberg University's JF Aber is the clubhouse leader with a 2-under-par 68.

Tee times on Saturday start at noon and men will be starting on hole one.
