Chandler, DiLeo Shine as Scots Hand West Conn First Loss

Bill Holtzer College of Wooster lacrosse DAVENPORT, Florida – Sophomore Paul Chandler was an iron gate, denying undefeated Western Connecticut State University time and time again, and classmate Vinny DiLeo was sizzling to the tune of five goals and three assists in The College of Wooster men's lacrosse team's 14-10 win on Wednesday afternoon at Northeast Regional Park.

Chandler turned aside 24 shots on the afternoon, which was consequential as Wooster (2-3) was actually outshot 52-44 by Western Connecticut State (4-1). Seven of the saves came in the first period, during which Wooster built a 4-2 lead, and 4-2 was the scoring margin again during Chandler's eight-save third period.

DiLeo found the scoring column twice in the first period, yet it was his passing game that raised eyebrows in the second. First-year Rory Zahren recorded one of his 15 faceoff wins after Western Connecticut State pulled within 4-3. Zahren was well-positioned on the win, resulting in a surge of Fighting Scots swarming the goal following the groundball pickup. The ball quickly went to DiLeo, who added one to the highlight reel with a behind-the-back flick pass to classmate Ben Byars, who scored his second of three goals on the day. Byars and DiLeo had first-half hat tricks in the win.

In the third, first-year Bill Holtzer scored a rare long-pole goal, beating his defender on a drive. That score made it a 10-5 game in favor of Wooster at the 9:17 mark. First-year Riley Schulze also scored his first goal in the win.

Sophomore Charlie Ballou rounded out the Scots with multiple goals on the day. Zahren added 10 groundballs to his 15 faceoff wins, while senior Tyler Schroeder scooped up five groundballs.

Kai Bruneau led Western Connecticut State with three goals, while Benjamin Hawthorne had a five-point afternoon on the basis of three assists and two goals. Brendan Grove logged nine of Western Connecticut State's 12 saves.

Wooster won the groundball battle 38-28 and went 18-of-27 on faceoffs. Western Connecticut State did play a relatively clean game, evidenced by just 11 turnovers and a perfect 22-of-22 mark on clears. Wooster was just as impressive on clears, going 26-of-31, with just one failed one in the first three periods.

Next, Wooster plays Clarkson University (6-0) at noon on Friday, March 18 at Northeast Regional Park in Davenport.
