Scots Can’t Knock Off 14th-Ranked Big Red

Paul Chandler The College of Wooster men's lacrosse team hosted No. 14 Denison University at Wooster High School on Thursday and took a 14-4 defeat in North Coast Athletic Conference play.

Denison (13-3, 6-1 NCAC) displayed a consistent offense that jumped out early with a 3-0 lead and only expanded it across the game.

Wooster (12-4, 3-4 NCAC) stayed with the Big Red with a pair of first quarter goals but could only find the back of the net twice after that.

The Scots had four different goal scorers in Will FinkTucker JosephVinny DiLeo and Ben Byars. Byars's goal was scored in a man-up situation and was the last goal of the game with five minutes remaining.

Casey Steffen assisted on Joseph's goal, and DiLeo assisted on Byars's score.

Steffen added a game-high six caused turnovers to put him at 80 on the year and 42 in conference play. He still leads the nation in caused turnovers per game.

Steffen also led the team with six ground balls. Jimmy Fisher and Mason Poisson added four each.

Denison's Luke Fisher led the game with three goals. Tommy Quinson and Nate Kay each scored two.

Wooster goalies Paul Chandler made 13 saves in the loss. Denison outshot the Scots 51-26. 

Denison won 13 faceoffs to Wooster's eight. The Big Red collected 50 ground balls to Wooster's 32, while turnovers were close to even with Denison holding the advantage at 23-21.

Wooster will wrap up its season Saturday at Copley High School in Akron where they will host Hiram College for its senior day.
