Steffen’s National Record Now Official, Scots Collect Pair of Statistical Championships

Casey Steffen, Wooster Lacrosse The College of Wooster's Casey Steffen is now officially the record holder for most caused turnovers per game in a season in NCAA Div. III men's lacrosse history, while his caused turnovers per game in 2023 and the team's opponent clearing percentage won national statistical titles upon the conclusion of the NCAA Div. III Men's Lacrosse Championships on Sunday afternoon.

Steffen unofficially broke the NCAA Div. III record for caused turnovers per game at 5.06 when the Fighting Scots' season concluded on April 29, but had to ride out the championships tournament to make it official. He surpassed the mark of 5.00 set just last spring by University of Dubuque's Ryan Doyle. Steffen's 86 caused turnovers more than doubled Wooster's single-season program record and rank as the third-most in NCAA Div. III history since the stat started being officially tracked by the NCAA in 2013. Steffen's 86 caused turnovers trail Doyle's 100 from 2022 and DeSales University's Frank Krug's 93 from 2019. Wooster's first men's lacrosse All-American since 2010 caused at least five turnovers in nine games this spring, headlined by a single-game conference- and program-best 12 against Wittenberg University on April 22. Steffen's 12 caused turnovers are tied for the fourth-most in a game in Div. III history.

Wooster held the opposition to a 62.7 clearing percentage this spring, well ahead of the runner-up 66.3 percent mark turned in by State University of New York at Delhi. Wooster's efforts in clearing were spearheaded by holding Wabash College to just seven successful clears on 34 attempts and Hiram College to a dismal 7-for-28 showing. Additionally, Capital University was held below 50 percent at 13-for-27, Allegheny College struggled mightily at 17-for-33, and State University New York Brockport did not fare much better at 10-of-17.

As a team, Wooster also posted top-three marks in groundballs per game (45.00) and caused turnovers per game (14.88).

Wooster went 13-4 this spring, with the wins ranking as the most in program history. Wooster started the year with a program-record 11-game winning streak and the Scots were one of the last four unbeaten teams with Div. III this spring.
