Fisher Breaks Groundballs Record at Denison

Austin Jourde, Wooster Lacrosse GRANVILLE, Ohio – The College of Wooster jumped out to a 2-0 lead on Denison University before the Big Red went on to a 23-6 victory on Saturday afternoon at Kienzle-Hylbert Stadium.

Sophomore Sutton Ursillo's caused turnover on Denison's (11-5, 7-0 North Coast Athletic Conference) Jack Chace gave Wooster the early scoring opportunity. Junior Will Fink scored the game's opening goal at the 12:31 mark. Wooster (10-5, 4-2 NCAC) senior Paul Chandler stopped a Jack Hines shot at the first quarter's 9:58 mark and the Scots worked the ball down the field to senior Ben Byars for the 2-0 lead. Senior Vinny DiLeo passed out the assist on the Byars score.

Hines' goal with 3:27 remaining in the opening quarter put Denison ahead. Chandler helped Wooster stay within one, saving a Tommy Quinson shot with 1:45 left in the stanza.  Four of Chandler's 14 saves came in the first.

Second-quarter Wooster highlights included a caused turnover-to-groundball by senior Rowan Keesser, while senior Seth Owens and sophomore Lane Kellogg were both credited with caused turnovers later in the stanza. Six Chandler saves were added to the game log in the third quarter. Wooster netted three fourth-quarter goals, with the scores coming from junior Colton Beaudoin, Byars, and sophomore Rowan Piani.

Senior Jimmy Fisher broke another record in Saturday's game. The faceoff specialist's groundball with 4:29 remaining was his 117th of the year, which surpassed his first-year total of 116 from 2021.

Senior Casey Steffen scooped up five groundballs. Byars led the Scots in scoring with two goals, sophomore Austin Jourde passed out two assists, and Kellogg and Ursillo were both credited with two caused turnovers.

Luke Fisher scored four goals and distributed four assists to lead Denison. He was backed up by Nate Kay's four goals and three assists and Hines' four-goal afternoon. The Big Red's Colin MacLean was the faceoff leader, finishing 10-for-12 with six groundballs.

Next, Wooster hosts Kenyon College (10-5, 4-2 NCAC) at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 23.
