Scots Rally After Slow Start to Defeat Wittenberg 3-2

Kyle Stringer Tuesday's contest against Wittenberg University looked bleak early, but The College of Wooster men's soccer team found innovative ways to score to roar back for a 3-2 win.

Wittenberg scored twice in the opening 20 minutes via goals from Andres Mujica and Kees Ciric. Wooster, searching for a spark, got one in the 32nd minute when Mason Garza lofted a shot high from almost midfield. His shot soared in the air, bounced over the keeper's head and into the back of the net.

Wooster took that momentum into halftime, despite trailing 2-1. Then for the second straight game, Max Wiley hit the equalizer. His aggressive play in the box resulted in a penalty shot, which he connected on in the 66th minute.

Wooster kept the pressure on and then in the 72nd minute, it was Kyle Stringer scoring what would be the game winner. Wooster benefited from a free kick and got three shots off before Stringer scored.

Aion Morton-Wizgen had his chance go blocked, and Miles Rochester had his shot saved for Stringer to pick up the goal on the rebound. Rochester was credited with the assist.

Wooster held onto the lead despite the late push from Wittenberg. Three additional yellow cards were called, including a second yellow that turned into a red.

Wittenberg had one last free kick late get sent toward the Wooster goal, but the defense fended off the attack.

Wooster outshout Wittenberg 21-15. Keeper Jason Prather made four saves.

Wooster improves to 5-5-3 overall and 2-1-1 in North Coast Athletic Conference play. Wittenberg drops to 7-4-1 overall and 2-2 in the NCAC.

The Scots travel to Ohio Wesleyan University on Saturday.
