Scots Topple Little Giants For First Time Since 2008

The College of Wooster men's soccer team collected a win over Wabash College for the first time since 2008 in a 2-1 victory in a North Coast Athletic Conference matchup no Saturday.

The teams were knotted 1-1 at halftime and up until the final minutes of regulation.

Wabash (5-5-3, 1-2-1 NCAC) struck first in the 38th minute. Wooster keeper Gabriel Thomas dove for a wet ball near the post but could not get a handle on it. That allowed Bryce Kinnaman to take advantage, finding an open Jose Escalante in front of the goal to score.

Wabash's lead did not last long, however, as Wooster made a dedicated effort to tie the game up.

In the 42nd minute, Wooster capitalized on a corner kick opportunity. Elliot Miller sent the ball in and, after an initial header attempt from Luca Napora, the ball fell at Napora's feet for him to score his second goal of the year.

The teams stayed tied all the way until the 86th minute when Wooster was awarded a penalty kick after a foul inside the box. Max Wiley failed on his opportunity, but made up for it after the initial scrum.

Miller sent the ball in after the goalie deflection, and after another bounce, Wiley connected to put Wooster up 2-1.

From there, things got chippy. Eight cards were issued in the game, five of which were issued in the final 10 minutes of the game. However, Wooster held on.

Plenty of shots were taken in the game. Wooster just outshot the Little Giants 21-20. In addition, Wabash took eight corner kicks to Wooster's six.

Thomas played the entire 90 minutes for the win. He made three saves.

Both Wooster and Wabash entered with four points in the NCAC standings, jockeying in the middle of the pack. Wooster breaks a two-game skid and moves to 5-6-3 overall and 2-2-1 in the NCAC.

Wooster did beat Wabash in an exhibition match in 2021 during the shortened spring season after COVID, 3-0.

Next, the Scots celebrate senior day in its final home contest of the season when Ohio Wesleyan University comes to Carl Dale Field.
