Scots Sweep Gators for First Win of Season

Senior Joaquin Abos Amo, who anchored The College of Wooster men's tennis team's lineup, led the Fighting Scots to win No. 1 on the season on "senior day", while plenty of contributions from further down the lineup resulted in a 9-0 win over Allegheny College on Saturday at the D.J. Hard Memorial Tennis Courts on Wooster's campus.

Abos Amo and first-year Shivam Dewan downed Allegheny's (0-2, 0-1 North Coast Athletic Conference East Division) Adam Shinomiya and Mackenzie Knowlton 8-3 at No. 1 doubles. In singles, Abos Amo took on Wonjoon Cho in the top flight, and the Scots' (1-5, 1-2 NCAC East Division) senior aced his match against the Gators' junior, winning 7-5, 6-2, in what also went down as the match-clincher. Of note, Abos Abo rallied back from a 3-0 hole in the first set.

Wooster took charge early, sweeping the doubles points. At No. 2, junior Nebyou Minassie and sophomore Alex Drewes held off Allegheny's Cho and Julien Voisey, 8-7. Third doubles came down to the wire as well. There, first-year Vakul Nath and sophomore Connor Streeter took an 8-7 decision over Nate Chubb and Guillaume Emiliano Loinard-Gonzalez.

Dewan continued his impressive recent play at No. 5 singles, where the Scots' rookie won 6-2, 6-1 over Chubb. At No. 4, Minassie rallied back against Voisey to win 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-7). Drewes and Shinomiya split sets at No. 2, with Drewes ultimately prevailing 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (10-7). Nath took his match versus Knowlton at No. 3, 6-2, 6-4.

Streeter rounded out the lineup with a 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (10-8) win over Fabrizzio Reategui at sixth singles. Notable, Streeter overcame a 7-3 deficit to win his third-set tiebreaker.

The same two teams are set to square off again on Sunday on Allegheny's campus. The teams are currently set to play indoors with the men's match starting at the conclusion of the women's 10 a.m. match.
