Senior Salute: Joaquin Abos Amo

Joaquin Abos Amo sidebar Q&A

Throughout the spring and summer, we'll be honoring our senior student-athletes with a "Senior Salute" series. Today's featured senior is Joaquin Abos Amo, a mathematics major from Ayegui, Spain. Abos Amo is a member of the men's tennis team.

Q: Why did you choose to attend The College of Wooster?
A: I chose to attend Wooster because of the close community, strong academics, and the opportunity to play tennis at a competitive level.

Q: What does it mean to you to be a Fighting Scot student-athlete?
A: It means that I have a responsibility to represent the values of a school with a great tradition that gave me the opportunity to come here. I have to give my 100 percent in every match and practice.

Q: What are some of your favorite memories as a student at The College of Wooster?
A: Playing home matches where my friends can come to watch and Black and Gold Weekend.

Q: What's the best part about being a student-athlete at The College of Wooster?
A: The close relationships you build with your teammates and all the memories you make.

Q: What else were you involved with on campus besides your sport?
A: I am part of the fraternity Phi Sigma Alpha, I work as a student assistant in the athletic training room, and I have also been part of other clubs and organizations in these past years like the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

Q: Which College of Wooster faculty or staff member has made the greatest impact on you and why?
A: My coach, Zachary Hasenyager. It can sometimes be complicated coming from a different country, but I think we have built a good relationship over the years. He has always been someone you can rely on and a support both on and off the court.

Q: What other people or resources impacted your Wooster experience in a positive way and how did these people/resources set you up to be successful at Wooster?
A: I think all my professors have impacted me in a positive way.

Q: Tell us a bit about your Independent Study project?
A: I am working on game theory and its applications to international relations and conflicts between countries. I am specifically looking at the Iranian Nuclear Deal.

Q: Tell us a bit about something cool you did as a student at The College of Wooster?
A: I like working on my I.S. project since I have been able to look at a field of mathematics that I have never studied before and apply it to an important situation that currently remains unsolved. All classes at Wooster offer research opportunities, and I think that's cool and helps you learn a lot more. The spring break trips have been amazing as well, along with North Coast Athletic Conference trips, and every other trip I've had with my team. As a sophomore, we stayed at a house right next to Venice Beach for spring break. We went running early in the morning and took walks at night by the beach, which was awesome.

Q: Reflecting back on your time at Wooster, what is one piece of advice you would give your first-year self?
A: Participate in as many things as you can. Embrace the hard work.
