Men Force Four Three-Set Matches But Fall to Cardinals

Alex Drewes Four of the six singles matches went to three sets as The College of Wooster men's tennis team lost a tough 6-3 matchup to Otterbein University on Sunday.

Trailing 2-1 after doubles play, the men did everything they could to get that fifth winning point.

The No. 1 through No. 4 flights all went to three sets, and if Wooster could take each, they would have won the match. However, they only took two of those four and fell in the other two singles matches.

Claiming a doubles victory was the No. 3 team of Alex Drewes and Walker Wood, who needed to win a tiebreaker to get it done, 8-7 (6).

The No. 1 team came close as Gabriel Escobar and Namit Misra fell 8-6. The No. 2 team of Shivam Dewan and Patrick Johnson took an 8-2 loss.

Escobar came back to win in the No. 1 singles flight, defeating Brandon Wall 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. Johnson took the other singles win, taking the No. 4 flight by the same score 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.

In the other three set matches, Drewes fell at the No. 2 spot 4-6, 6-1, 6-4, and Dewan lost the No. 3 flight 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.

The No. 5 and No. 6 flights went to just two sets as Otterbein (4-1) took both. At No. 5, Misra fell 6-2, 7-5, and at No. 6, Alex Anikeeff lost 6-1, 6-3.

Wooster (0-3) will continue to seek its first win of the season when it hosts Grove City College next Saturday.
