Wooster Men Pick Up First NCAC Win Over OWU, 5-4

Alex Drewes DELAWARE - The College of Wooster men's tennis team picked up its first North Coast Athletic Conference victory of the season on Saturday as they defeated Ohio Wesleyan University 5-4.

Wooster took a 2-1 lead into singles play thanks to a pair of hard-fought doubles wins.

At No. 1 doubles, Gabriel Escobar and Patrick Johnson outlasted Saranpahon Siriwanichkul and Jose Mancilla, 8-7(4). The first point of the match came from Wooster's doubles team of Alex Drewes and Shivam Dewan who held off Kobe Francis and Marcelo Aguilar, 8-6.

The Battling Bishops secured the final point in doubles as Elliot Spicer and Rainer Holl defeated Alex Anikeeff and Namit Misra, 8-6.

Drews defeated Francis, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles to put the Fighting Scots up 3-1. Dewan followed with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Macilla at No. 4 singles to make it a 4-1 advantage in favor of the Fighting Scots.

The clincher came from Johnson at No. 3 singles after a three-set win over Aguilar, 7-5, 1-6, 6-4. It marked the second win of the season for Johnson out of the third flight while running his season record to 8-8. 

Ohio Wesleyan picked up its second point at No. 1 singles where Siriwanichkul outlasted Escobar, 4-6, 7-6(2), 6-0.

The Battling Bishops also added singles wins from the fifth and sixth flights as Elliott Spicer topped Misra in three sets and Holl defeated Atomu Maruyama, 6-1, 6-3. 

Wooster improves to 5-11 overall and 1-5 in the NCAC. The Fighting Scots are back in action tomorrow when they travel to Wittenberg for a 3 p.m. match against the Tigers.
