Another Sweep Sunday Gives Softball 4-0 Start to Year

Anna Norby The College of Wooster softball team swept its competition this weekend to start the season at 4-0 after wins over Centre College, 9-1, and Asbury University, 6-4, on Sunday.

The first years stepped up big this weekend and it started with game one starting pitcher Lynnsey Delio.

In the opening bout against Centre (0-3), Delio went the distance again with her only blemish being a home run in the sixth. She struck out three and finished the weekend trip giving up one earned run in 14 innings pitched.

Wooster broke open a scoreless game in the fourth when Anna Norby doubled to right center to score Ella Wolff. Norby was brought home on a single from Stephanie Griffin-Sanchez, while Wooster manufactured its last two runs of the inning on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly.

The Scots recorded three sacrifice flies in the game.

Norby led the crew going a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with two RBI and two runs scored. First-year Cate Barkdoll also went 4-for-4 but with two doubles and an RBI.

Griffin-Sanchez went 1-for-4 with two RBI, and Kaydee Clark went 1-for-4 with an RBI.

In game two versus Asbury (1-2), Wooster broke a 1-1 tie with a five-run fifth inning. They recorded five hits and capitalized on an error to make it a 6-1 game.

Senior starter Addie Tagg picked up the win after giving up three runs across five innings. She started the sixth but was relieved after two batters reached.

Junior Rachael Dudziak pitched the final two frames, allowing just one unearned run.

The first-years Julia Jennings, Delio and Wolff all collected two hits in the second game. Wooster did not collect any extra base hits but still managed six runs on nine hits.

Wolff led the squad with two RBI and a walk after a 2-for-2 day.

The Scots will get a whole month to think about its strong start to the season as their next games come during its spring break trip starting on March 13.
