Scots Underway On Its Spring Break Trip

Kaydee Clark The College of Wooster softball team won its first game on its Florida spring break trip to open the season at 5-0, a first for the program since 2013.

They have played four games so far, going 1-3 in the first two days.

In the opener, Wooster defeated Geneva College, 10-5.

The bottom of the lineup did its part as the trio of Anna NorbyCiara Herbert and Emma Hetkey combined to go 7-of-12. They scored six of the team's runs as the top two batters of the lineup, Stephanie Griffin-Sanchez and Kaydee Clark, drove them in for a combined five RBI.

The Scots collected 16 hits, all of which were singles. Clark finished 3-for-3 at the plate with three RBI, while Hetkey went 3-for-4.

Hetkey also stole three bases, including one in a double steal as she took second. Herbert scored on the play to put Wooster ahead 6-3 in the fifth. The team combined for six stolen bases.

Rachael Dudziak received the win, going six innings, striking out three and allowing four earned runs on 80 pitches.

In game two on day one, Wooster fell to Lake Forest College 8-5. Wooster collected 10 hits but was hurt on a five-run fourth and a three-run sixth from the Foresters.

Hetkey again went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Clark and Cate Barkdoll each collected a pair of hits as well.

The bats went quiet on day two as Wooster lost to Westminster College 2-0 and SUNY New Paltz 5-1.

The Westminster game featured complete games from each of the team's starters. Wooster first-year Lynnsey Delio allowed just one earned run and struck out three in the loss. Elizabeth Malczak took the win in a seven-hit shutout.

Barkdoll recorded a double, and Herbert went 2-for-3 to lead the offense.

Against SUNY New Paltz, Wooster had just five hits and commited six errors in the field. The starter Dudziak gave up one earned run in three innings, while senior Addie Tagg pitched four innings to close out the game, allowing just one earned run.

On the trip so far, Clark is hitting .538 (7-of-13), Hetkey is batting .500 (7-of-14) and Jennings is hitting .400 (6-of-15).

Jennings and Clark have also hit safely in all eight games so far this season.

Delio has thrown 9.1 innings, striking out eight and allowing just three earned runs for a 2.30 ERA.

Wooster has six more games in Florida with its next two on Thursday against Babson College and Defiance College.
