Scots Defeat 20th-Ranked Millikin as Spring Break Trip Comes to Close

Softball group The College of Wooster softball team closed its latter half of its spring break schedule going 4-2 with highlight wins over 20th ranked Millikin University and Babson College, who received votes in the latest coaches' poll.

Wooster also secured come from behind wins in three games as they move to 9-5 on the season.

On Monday, Wooster battled a pair of ranked foes. They defeated Millikin 5-1 but fell to 15th-ranked Tufts University 11-2 in five innings.

Against Millikin, Wooster trailed 1-0 until a huge five-inning fifth, scoring every run with two outs.

First-year Julia Jennings drove in a run after battling back from an 0-2 count to draw a bases loaded walk. Classmate Cate Barkdoll then proceeded to hit her first career home run, a blast over the center field fence as the grand slam made it 5-1.

First-year Lynnsey Delio went the distance on the mound, allowing just one run and striking out four in seven innings. She retired nine straight from the last out of the fourth to the second out in the seventh.

Wooster started the second half of its spring break schedule with three wins, opening with a 12-5 win over Babson. Wooster jumped on the Beavers early with a seven-run first inning, highlighted by a three-run home run from first-year Katie Mommers.

Babson cut Wooster's lead to three in the fifth at 8-5, but the Scots responded with four in the sixth. After Ella Wolff scored Barkdoll on a single to left field, patience was key for the Scots.

Wooster drew five consecutive walks as Lilly McLendonStephanie Griffin-Sanchez and Kaydee Clark were all credited with an RBI for walking with the bases loaded.

Delio pitched another complete game in the win, striking out three and allowing just four earned runs.

Wooster rallied for its next two wins in a 5-4 win over Defiance College and a 3-2 win over St. Lawrence University.

Against Defiance, Wooster trailed 4-2 heading into its final frame and did not record an out in its seventh inning comeback. Griffin-Sanchez singled to lead off, and Clark doubled before Barkdoll doubled to bring both home to tie the game. After a walk and a wild pitch to advance both runners, Delio grounded to short for the walk off win.

Against St. Lawrence, Wooster entered the seventh with just four hits to its name but used small ball to finally get on the board and capture the lead for good. A single and an error put runners on the basepaths as Mommers brought one home on a groundout.

Then, Griffin-Sanchez doubled through the left side to score two more runs.

Senior Addie Tagg was on the mound and made quick work in the bottom of the inning to secure the win. She pitched the complete game and threw a career-high 11 strikeouts.

Over the trip, Jennings hit a team-best .412 average (14-of-34). Emma Hetkey, in 19 at bats, hit .474. Clark batted .333 with six RBI and Barkdoll finished with a team-best eight RBI.

Delio went 3-3 with a 3.09 ERA, and Tagg went 1-1 with a 3.74 ERA.

Wooster returns home to face Baldwin Wallace University in a double header on Sunday.
