Scots Rake 21 Runs on 32 Hits For Two-Game Sweep Over Capital

Addie Tagg COLUMBUS –  The College of Wooster softball team scored 21 runs on 32 hits across its two-game sweep of Capital University on Thursday, winning game one 12-6 and game two 9-5.

Senior Addie Tagg was instrumental in both wins. She pitched five scoreless innings of relief in game one to collect the win, and then launched a grand slam in the seventh of game two to break a 5-5 tie.

In game one, Wooster trailed 6-1 before flipping the script for a 12-6 win. They scored two in the fifth and batted around for a seven-run sixth inning.

Tagg came on in the third and gave the Scots exactly what it needed with five innings of two-hit softball. She improved to 3-2 on the year with the win.

In the sixth, Ciara Herbert and Lilly McLendon each went 2-for-2 in the inning and crossed home plate once.

Anna Norby brought Herbert home on a bunt. Kaydee Clark scored another on a single.

Then, Cate Barkdoll and Tagg each collected two-run hits with Barkdoll's a single down the left field line and Tagg's a double to left center.

Barkdoll finished 4-for-5 with a double and five RBI. Julia JenningsEmma Hetkey and Stephanie Griffin-Sanchez all recorded three hits.

In fact, the first four batters of the lineup collectively went 13-for-19 at the plate. Altogether, the Scots tallied 20 hits, including 10 in its big sixth inning.

In game two, it was another big inning for the Scots that did the trick, but this one came in the seventh. Trailing 5-4, Wooster put its first three batters on before Jennings singled home the first. 

Tagg then came up with one out and sent the ball flying over the left field fence for the grand slam.

Junior Rachael Dudziak went 4.2 innings in the no decision. Lynnsey Delio (7-3) came on in the fifth, pitching the final 2.1 innings, allowing just two hits and collecting the win.

Griffin-Sanchez went 3-for-4 with two runs scored atop the lineup. Also of note, Griffiin-Sanchez stole three bases in game two, tying the program single game record, last done in 2021 by Brooke Swain.

Clark and Ella Wolff hit doubles in game two. Jennings and Stacey Harris each went 2-for-4, while Tagg went 1-for-2 with a home run and four RBI.

The Scots move to 12-6 with the sweep, while Capital drops to 4-4. Wooster opens North Coast Athletic Conference play this weekend when it hosts Denison University on Saturday.
