NCAC Opener A Split for Softball

Stephanie Griffin-Sanchez The College of Wooster softball team split with Ohio Wesleyan University in its North Coast Athletic Conference opener, falling 3-1 in game one and taking game two 6-0.

Wooster had just one extra base hit in game one, which mirrored its other games in its mini three-game skid. Stephanie Griffin-Sanchez hit her first home run of the season in the fifth, which ended a 3-for-3 game at the plate for the junior.

The other seven hits for Wooster were all singles. Lynnsey Delio, who got the start on the mound, went 2-for-3 at the plate, while Emma HetkeyJulia Jennings and Anna Norby all added a hit.

Delio pitched a quality game, going the distance, giving up three earned runs and throwing two strikeouts. Her opposition was just slightly better, as Katie Chittum also pitched the complete game and struck out four.

The Scots broke through in a much-needed way in game two with 11 hits, five of which were doubles.

The first was a double to left center from Cate Barkdoll which scored Griffin-Sanchez in the first inning. Barkdoll did it again in the fourth, this time scoring Griffin-Sanchez on a ball to the fence in center field.

Wooster then had a three-run fifth inning where Addie Tagg doubled to score Kaydee Clark. Three batters later, Hetkey doubled on a blooper down the left field line with the bases loaded, scoring two.

Wooster then got it done on the mound with its three pitchers. Junior Rachael Dudziak got the win in four innings but Tagg helped in the fifth, getting the Scots out of a pickle after the first two batters reached. She faced three batters and got all three out.

Delio then came on to pitch the final two frames, allowing just one hit and striking out two.

Jennings went 3-for-4 in game two. Barkdoll was 2-for-4 with her two doubles, while Anna Norby went 2-for-3 with one double herself.

Wooster moves to 13-9 overall and 1-1 in conference play. Ohio Wesleyan is now 6-12 overall and also 1-1 in the NCAC.

Wooster will take a short road trip to Kenyon College on Wednesday before returning home for a weekend stay against two NCAC teams.
