Dudziak Gem Salvages Sweep with Wittenberg

Rachael Dudziak Junior Rachael Dudziak gave The College of Wooster softball team a pitching performance when they needed it most, breaking a three-game skid and salvaging a split with Wittenberg University on Saturday.

Wooster fell in six innings in game one, 10-2, and took game two, 4-1, in the North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader.

Dudziak's only blemish on her line was an unearned run in the seventh as she went the complete game, allowing five hits and striking out one. She started her appearance facing the minimum through two innings before Wittenberg recorded its first hit in the third.

She also left six runners stranded on base.

Classmate Stephanie Griffin-Sanchez broke the seal of a scoreless game with a no-doubt solo home run in the bottom of the third.

That score remained until Wooster came up to bat in the sixth where Emma Hetkey scored on a fielding error, and Ella Wolff recorded a two-run single to center field.

Wooster collected just six hits in the game, with Wolff accounting for two on a 2-for-3 day at the plate.

Game one was a different story where Wittenberg scored in every inning, scoring 10 runs on 11 hits.

Wooster attempted to rally in the fifth with RBI singles from Hetkey and Julia Jennings, but their rally was cut short due to a double play on an attempt to score at home on a fly ball to center field.

First-year Lynnsey Delio lasted just 1.2 innings in the loss. Senior Addie Tagg covered the remainder of the game in relief.

Wittenberg moved to 8-21 overall and 5-3 in NCAC play. Wooster is now 16-12 overall and 4-4 in the NCAC.

The Scots will detour to Muskingum University for a non-conference game on Thursday before coming back home Saturday to host Denison University (12-10), who currently sits atop the conference standings at 4-0.
