Scots Split with Oberlin in Crucial NCAC Matchup

Sarah Lodge OBERLIN – The College of Wooster softball team took a split against Oberlin College on Wednesday, taking game one, 5-0, and falling in nine innings in game two, 4-3.

With just two games left in North Coast Athletic Conference play after today, a split makes the Scots' journey into making the conference tournament a little more difficult.

In game one, Lynnsey Delio pitched her second career shutout and her first since opening day.

The first-year allowed just four hits and struck out one to collect her 10th win of the year. She received plenty of help from her backstop as well in Kaydee Clark, who caught a pair of runners stealing.

Clark also helped the Scots plenty at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBI. She broke the seal in the second inning on a single to center field, scoring Julia Jennings.

Clark then made it a 2-0 game, reaching on an error but recording the RBI to bring Delio home.

The Scots increased its lead on a sacrifice fly from Sarah Lodge. Jennings then brought home two on a single to center field in the seventh.

The Scots collected 11 hits. Delio also went 2-for-3 but added the Scots' only extra base hit with a double. Anna Norby went 2-for-3, while Emma Hetkey and Jennings each went 2-for-4.

In game two, Wooster struck in the second on an RBI from Stephanie Griffin-Sanchez, and that would be all of the scoring from either team until the seventh.

Oberlin extended the game in the bottom of the seventh before Wooster scored two in the ninth. Lodge hit her first collegiate home run to put Wooster on top, while Cate Barkdoll gave Wooster some insurance with an RBI single.

Unfortunately, Wooster could not hold onto the lead in the bottom of the inning. An error extended the inning and allowed Oberlin to cut the deficit by one.

Delio got the second out, and Wooster had an opportunity for another out on a rundown from third to home, but that runner retreated safely, and Oberlin (9-25, 4-10 NCAC) hit three consecutive singles to walk off with the win.

Delio was responsible for just one earned run and was hit with the loss. Rachael Dudziak started and pitched the first three innings, while Addie Tagg pitched the next four.

The Scots move to 19-15 and 7-5 in NCAC play.

It's a crowded field with just two games left in conference play to claim the four spots for the NCAC Tournament. After play on Wednesday, DePauw is first with a 10-2 record, followed by Denison in second at 9-3. Those teams face each other to end the year.

Ohio Wesleyan and Wooster sit at 7-5, Wittenberg is at 7-7 and Hiram sits at 6-6.

The Scots will wrap up conference play at Hiram on Saturday.
