Softball Drops Two in NCAC play

The College of Wooster softball team had a difficult setback on Saturday, falling in two North Coast Athletic Conference games to Wittenberg University, 4-3 in 10 innings and 4-0.

The Scots played a marathon game in game one as first-year pitcher Tori Conner went the distance, throwing 133 pitches.

Wooster could not hold on to a 10th inning lead after Cate Barkdoll hit a single down the left field line to make it a 3-2 game.

However, after Conner got the first two outs in the bottom of the inning, things started to get rough. A passed ball moved the inherited runner from second to third, and a ball four wild pitch tied the game.

A steal and a single later put runners on the corners before a single up the middle from Julia Burch, which was her game-high fourth hit of the game, secured the win for the Tigers.

Emma Hetkey led the way, offensively, with a 3-of-5 outing at the plate. Barkdoll, Conner and Julia Jennings all recorded an RBI each.

In game two, the offense continued to struggle, collecting six hits as three Wittenberg pitchers combined for the shutout. The defense also struggled, committing five errors in the field.

Stephanie Griffin-Sanchez and Barkdoll each collected a pair of hits.

Senior Rachael Dudziak started and took the loss after two innings of work. Sophomore Lynnsey Delio pitched four innings of relief, allowing two earned runs.

Wittenberg moves to 17-15 overall and 3-3 in the NCAC. Wooster snaps a four-game winning streak, moving to 14-16 overall and 5-3 in the NCAC.

Wooster will look to rebound at DePauw University on Sunday.
