Softball Squanders Leads at DePauw

GREENCASTLE, Ind. – The College of Wooster softball team held late leads in both Sunday games at DePauw University but ended up on the wrong end of both games, falling 9-8 and 4-3.

For the second time this weekend, the Scots were one out away from a win only to lose that game. In game one, DePauw scored eight of its nine runs in the final three innings.

Wooster had two outs in the seventh with a runner on before a hitting a batter on an 0-2 count. That led to a single in the outfield and some bad decision making in the field to give the Tigers the walk-off win.

Sophomore Ella Wolff hit her first career home run. It was a two-run shot in the second to give the Scots a 5-1 lead.

She went a perfect 4-for-4 in the game. Julia Jennings walked twice and was also perfect at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a double.

Tori Conner started and took the no decision in 5.1 innings. Lynnsey Delio took the loss, allowing four runs in the final 1.1 innings.

In game two, DePauw took an early 1-0 lead after the first inning, but Wooster tied the game on a sacrifice fly in the fourth.

Wooster stayed on the attack, scoring two runs in the top of the fifth. Senior Ciara Herbert scored on an error and Wolff singled home another run to make it 3-1.

Unfortunately, DePauw would answer with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Starter Rachael Dudziak got chased after recording the first out to finish her day.

Delio came in and could only record one out as Dudziak's inherited runner scored as did two others. Senior Lilly McLendon came in to get the final out and pitched a total of 1.1 scoreless innings.

Emma Hetkey recorded three hits, while Wolff and Cate Barkdoll each went 2-for-3.

Wooster drops to 14-18 overall and 5-5 in the NCAC. DePauw is 20-11-1 and stays perfect at 8-0 in the NCAC.

Wooster will look for a tune-up on Thursday when they travel to The University of Mount Union for their final non-conference game of the season.
