Scots Battle OAC Leading Purple Raiders

ALLIANCE – The College of Wooster softball team took on the fifth ranked team in the region in The University of Mount Union on Thursday and fell in both games, 5-4 and 6-2.

The Scots (14-20) had the Purple Raiders (29-4) on the ropes in game one taking a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the seventh. However, the Scots could not record an out in the inning as Mount Union recorded a pair of hits and stole a couple bases before Sydney Mercer's two-run double to right center ended the game.

Senior Stephanie Griffin-Sanchez put Wooster ahead in the top of the third with a two-run blast to left center, scoring first-year Brenna Haydu who doubled earlier in the inning.

Mount Union, who is undefeated in the OAC, retook the lead in the fourth before Wooster got it back in the sixth thanks to part to a RBI double from Cate Barkdoll. Senior Kaydee Clark hit a ball to right field to score Barkdoll later in the inning.

First-year Tori Conner pitched the complete game, striking out three.

Emma Hetkey was the lone Scot to record multiple hits, going 3-for-4 from the No. 2 hole.

Mount Union collected 13 hits, five of which went for extra bases, to back starting pitcher Kendyll Cahill, who went the complete game, striking out four.

In game two, Mount Union never looked back after a four-run fourth inning. They tallied 16 hits, led by a 4-for-4 performance from Adri George.

Barkdoll went 2-for-3 with an RBI single in the fourth, while Julia Jennings brought home another run in the fifth.

Wooster will return to North Coast Athletic Conference action Sunday when they travel to face Ohio Wesleyan University.
