Scots Collect Another All-NCAC Honor

Josh Pearson, College of Wooster Swimming GRANVILLE, Ohio – The College of Wooster's women's 400 medley relay capped night two of the North Coast Athletic Conference Championships with all-conference honors, and sophomore Josh Pearson lowered his school record in the 200 individual medley twice at Denison University's Trumbull Aquatic Center.

Senior Molly Likins moved Wooster's relay up to third during the breaststroke leg, then first-years Ollie Bream and Hallie Findlan maintained the position through the butterfly and freestyle legs, respectively. Senior Mia Chen led off the medley relay, which came in with the third-place time of 3:54.70.

Wooster nearly had an all-conference showing in the men's 400 medley relay, but Wabash College rallied back during the final 50 yards to take the latest razor-thin showdown between the NCAC rivals 3:27.61 to 3:27.74. Wooster, which held off Wabash in the 400 freestyle relay to secure its first top-four finish in a decade at the 2017 NCAC Championships, edged ahead of the Little Giants in Thursday's race in the butterfly, thanks to Pearson's split of 50.43. First-year Ryan Gross was still slightly ahead of Wabash first-year Ethan Johns heading into the final 50 yards, with Johns going on to overtake the Scots down the stretch. First-year Damien Donado and junior Noah Golovan opened the Scots' relay as the backstroke and breaststroke legs.

Pearson, who entered the day already holding Wooster's 200 individual medley record at 1:53.86, went 1:52.18 in prelims, qualifying for the championship final in the process. There, he touched eighth at 1:51.77, with that time just a shade slower than the Div. III "B" cut standard of 1:51.45.

Wooster opened Thursday's session with matching fifth-place showings in the 200 freestyle relay. In the men's race, Gross, first-year Zach Fickes, first-year Aiden Lentz, and senior Doak Schultz went 1:25.85, while in the women's timed final, Findlan, sophomore Maddie Becker, sophomore Emma Connors, and Likins stopped the clock at 1:38.54.

In all, four Wooster individuals qualified for championship finals on Thursday. Bream's 2:07.26 was eighth in the 200 individual medley, and her time sits behind W Association Hall of Famer Liz Whittam's 2:05.36 from 2002 on the program top times list. Findlan earned her way into the 50 freestyle championship final with a 23.95 in prelims. She took ninth in finals at 23.82, a near-identical time to her relay leadoff split of 23.81, which is the third-fastest 50 freestyle time in program history. First-year Isaac Shaker claimed the last spot in the 500 freestyle championship final, thanks to a 4:46.78 in prelims. He shaved a few tenths off that for a 4:46.47 in finals, which was ninth, and the time is now on the program's top-10 performers list, checking in at No. 10.

Elsewhere, first-year Andre Yazhbin scored 14 points in the 500 freestyle with the 16th-place time of 4:56.49. Connors' 5:15.81 was the top time among Wooster's women's entries in the 500 freestyle, and that was good for 12th-place. Senior Kate Schlegel won the 500 freestyle bonus heat, touching at 5:26.59.

Next, Wooster had two individuals in the consolation final of the men's 200 individual medley. There, first-year Tucker Andrewjeski (1:55.99) and Golovan (1:58.73) placed 12th and 16th, respectively, while first-year Nathan Ferrence led the field in the bonus heat, posting the winning time of 2:02.05. On the women's side, Becker's 2:10.28 ranked 11th, and the time vaulted the sophomore onto the program's top-10 times list for the event. Senior Madison Whitman was not far behind Becker, taking 13th at 2:10.75.

Gross had the best showing of Wooster's entries in the 50 freestyle. He made the consolation final with a 21.63 before settling for a 21.70 (18th-place) in the nightcap.

Denison overtook Kenyon College atop the men's standings, with the Big Red carrying a 732-568 lead over the Lords into day three. Wabash (332 points), DePauw University (312 points), and Wooster (309.5 points) round out the top five. Kenyon (614 points), Denison (610 points), DePauw (351 points), Wooster (306 points), and Oberlin College (269 points) are the top five on the women's side.

Friday's action starts at 9:30 a.m. with preliminaries and finals pick up at 6 p.m. The NCAC is not permitting spectators at the championships.
