Wooster Sweeps NCAA Div. II Ashland

Max Likins, Wooster Swimming Another NCAA Div. II program was no match for The College of Wooster's NCAA Div. III swimming and diving team, which convincingly swept aside Ashland University 147-117 (men) and 166-111 (women) on Saturday afternoon at Timken Natatorium.

Wooster's women extended its dual winning streak to 18. Wooster has won 40 of its last 41 dual meets, with nine of the wins coming against Div. II teams, and on top of that, the Fighting Scots won a three-team relay meet in 2021 over a NCAA Div. I (Cleveland State University) and a Div. II (Notre Dame College (Ohio)) program.

Saturday's wire-to-wire win started with senior Min Kim, junior Maddie Becker, first-year Keara Wiley, and first-year Gracie Duchon winning the 200 medley relay at 1:55.62. Sophomore Ollie Bream followed with the winning time of 2:00.75 in the 200 freestyle, and the Scots were already comfortably ahead of the Eagles, thanks to junior Emma Connors (2:05.81) and first-year Lacey Mindock (2:07.98) backing Bream's winning effort up with second- and third-place finishes. In fact, Wooster had the top-three finishers in three women's events, and Bream led the way in two of them. Her 2:16.06 in the 200 individual medley was followed by Becker's 2:17.26 and Duchon's 2:22.97. In the 500 freestyle, Connors led the Scots' one-two-three finish with a time of 5:30.84, and Mindock (5:32.81) and first-year Emma Humbert (5:33.14) were not far behind.

Bream totaled four wins on the day, with the others coming in the 50 butterfly (27.43) and 100 butterfly (1:01.04). Sophomore Hallie Findlan, this week's North Coast Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week, was Wooster's other quadruple winner. She touched first in the 50 backstroke (28.44), 50 freestyle (24.60), 100 freestyle (54.24), and the 200 freestyle relay (1:44.97).

Other women's winners included Becker in the 50 (31.80) and 100 breaststrokes (1:09.84) and Wiley, Kim, and Connors rounded out the winning 200 freestyle relay.

Wooster's men matched the women with an all-Scot top-three 200 freestyle. Sophomore Isaac Shaker went 1:50.45 to lead the trio, first-year Will Laubacher (1:51.54) took second-place, and sophomore Ryan Gross (1:53.05) touched third.

Senior Doak Schultz turned in the most wins for Wooster with four blue ribbons. He anchored the winning 200 medley relay that consisted of sophomore Max Likins, senior Noah Golovan, and junior Josh Pearson, and posted a meet-opening time of 1:38.69. Individually, Schultz's 21.93 in the 50 freestyle, 24.06 in the 50 butterfly, and 1:28.74 as part of the 200 freestyle relay bested the field. Schultz was joined on the meet-capping relay by first-year Callum Glover, sophomore Zach Fickes, and Gross.

Likins took charge in the backstroke events, winning the 50-yard race with a time of 26.07 and the 100-yard race at 56.56. Pearson led the way in the 100 butterfly with the winning time of 52.88.

Next, Wooster hosts the annual Wooster Invitational, which takes place December 1-3 at Ellen Shapiro Natatorium (swimming) and Timken Natatorium (diving).
