Scots Claim Two All-NCAC honors, Herron Breaks School Indoor 60 Meter Record

GRANVILLE, Ohio -- The first day is in the books for The College of Wooster track and field teams as they traveled to Denison University to compete in the 2020 North Coast Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships. 

Wooster captured two All-NCAC honors, saw an indoor program record get broken and advanced a number of individuals to Saturday's final heats.

Junior Mark Herron broke the indoor school record in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.13 seconds, which was also good enough for seventh to advance him to Saturday's finals. The record was previously set by Ben Kingstone (7.17) in 2016.

The men's distance medley relay team earned All-NCAC honors after a third place finish and a time of 10:33.12. That team consisted of Aedan PettitMatt OlszewskiMatt Klonowski and Miki Rae.

Sophomore Isabelle Hoover earned the other All-NCAC accolade in the 5000 meter run with a third place time of 18:49.89. She led the pack for the first half of the race but Kenyon College runners Emma Becker (18:06.87) and Eleanor Tetreault (18:11.34) took over in the latter half.

Continuing with the women, sophomore Maya Vasta put forth the fastest time in the 400 meters at 1:01.66 to qualify for the finals. She also qualified in the 200 meters with a third place finish and a time of 26.74 seconds.

Christine Weber was 13th in the shot put (34 feet, 8.25 inches). First-year Sierra Lapasky ran an 8.47 time in the 60 dash for 11th.

The women's distance relay team of Marian OverfieldAudrey CordovaCobi Warstler and Kayla Bertholf finished sixth (13:05.83).

For the men, first-year Cowen Croft gave the men its first points after placing in a three-way tie for eighth in the pole vault after clearing 11 feet, 11.75 inches on his second attempt.

Sophomore William McMichael qualified for the finals of the 400 meters after finishing second in the prelims with a time of 50.87 seconds.

McMichael and Herron also raced in the 200 meters finishing 10th (23.17) and 11th (23.20), respectively.

Elsewhere, sophomore Conor Greene threw 42 feet, six inches in the weight throw for 10th. Kristian Coleman placed 11th in the triple jump (40 feet, 11.5 inches).

First-years Korey Simmons (8.91) and Joe Shilts (9.09) were ninth and 10th, respectively, in the 60 hurdles, and sophomore Alexander DeLong was 10th (2:02.59) in the 800 meters.

Wabash leads the men's standings at 63.66 points, while Wooster sits in eighth with 6.33 points. For the women, Oberlin leads at 58 points with Wooster's women placed in seventh with nine points.

The NCAC Championships resume Saturday with field events starting at 10 a.m. and running events at 2:30 p.m.
