Kromer, Callender Claim All-NCAC Honors to Open Championships

Morgan Kromer GREENCASTLE, Ind. – The College of Wooster track and field teams opened the first day of the North Coast Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships by claiming two All-NCAC honors and putting themselves in a prime position for Saturday's session after a day full of prelims.

The women and men each had one member earn All-NCAC honors with Morgan Kromer in the pole vault and Will Callender in the 5,000 meters.

The women made an impact in Friday's field events with Kromer leading the way. The senior dominated in the pole vault, taking first place with a new school record vault of 11 feet, 4.25 inches.

She was one of two competitors to reach 10 feet, 10 inches and the only to go above 11 feet. Kromer hit at 11 feet, 1.75 inches before scoring the 11 feet, 4.25 inches mark in one try. 

Junior Ainsley Wiesner once again upped her school record in the weight throw, reaching 50 feet, 9.25 inches for fourth place on Friday. Natalie Tanner also scored points with a sixth-place finish on a throw of 48 feet.

The sophomore Callender earned All-NCAC honors with a third place run of 15:08.39 in the 5,000 meters. Callender scored last year in the event in a time of 15:22.48.

Scoring in the other finals events, junior Athena Tharenos took sixth in the 5,000 meters at 18:20.98, and sophomore Echo Kidd placed sixth in the long jump with a leap of 21 feet.

The men's distance medley relay team consisting of Ben NicholsJoe ShiltsCam Ray and Drew Robertson placed fifth with a time of 10:42.32. The women's team of Igna MendezEmily MunsonHaley Bloom and Elise Greenwald wrapped up day one in seventh at 14:50.25.

In the prelims, first-year Lorenzo Freeman ran the 60-meter hurdles to finish second at 8.56 seconds.

Nick Scherson finished third (50.92) and Will McMichael fifth (51.42) in the 400.

Sophomore Drew Robertson finished seventh in the 800 (2:01.60), and first-year Khaleel Manderson sneaked in with an eighth-place finish in the 60 meters (7.17).

For the women, Clare Mackin and Mary Sirois will race in the finals of the 60 hurdles after finishing in fourth and fifth place, respectively.

Bloom raced to seventh (1:03.01) in the 400 prelims, and Drew Patterson placed seventh as well in the 60 dash (8.19).

After day one, the men find themselves tied in fourth place with a score of 21 points. Wabash College leads the field with 49 points.

The women scored 33 points as they sit in fifth of seven teams. Oberlin College currently leads the pack with 48 points.

The second and final day of the NCAC Championships starts with the field events at 10 a.m. Saturday. Running events are expected to start at 2:15 p.m.
