Wooster Secures Yearlong Dual Meets Crown Over Denison

Nick Scherson, Wooster track & field GRANVILLE, Ohio – The College of Wooster claimed victory over North Coast Athletic Conference rival Denison University, as the series of dual meets for the year reached a conclusion on Wednesday afternoon at Deeds Field-Piper Stadium. The Fighting Scots' women posted an 83-71 victory over the Big Red, while the men's squads finished deadlocked at 82. With the win and tie, Wooster finished the year 3-2-1 against Denison in the dual meet standings, which take into account cross country, indoor track & field, and outdoor track & field.

Wooster's throwers spearheaded the series-clinching performances, starting with junior Ainsley Wiesner, who again upped the hammer throw record, this time to 159 feet, 10 inches. Wiesner then set her sights on taking down the javelin throw record, winning that event with a collegiate-best mark of 121 feet, 1 inch, the fourth-best in program history and top showing since Katharina Kroll's 121 feet, 3 inches in 2011.

First-year Evie Sanford, who recently set the outdoor discus throw record, won the event at 123 feet, 9 inches. The two-time NCAC Athlete of the Week was the runner-up in the shot put at 38 feet, 6.75 inches, with that marking a new collegiate-best and the fifth-best mark in program history.

Senior Conor Greene's 157 feet in the hammer throw marked a career-best, and he won the event. Greene continued to creep towards Tyler Catlin's school record of 163 feet that has stood since 2016.

Wooster swept the high jump and pole vault titles on the day. Senior Luke Henke went 6 feet, 2.75 inches on the men's side in the high jump, while junior Drew Patterson led the women's entries at 5 feet, 3.25 inches. Junior Dylan Garretson cleared 15 feet, 5 inches in the men's pole vault, while senior Morgan Kromer was just off her outdoor collegiate-best at 10 feet, 11.5 inches, which won the women's event.

Nine more first-place finishes were turned in on the track, three of which came from relays. Sophomore Maia Doescher, first-year Izzy Cozzie, Patterson, and sophomore Clare Mackin teamed up for a 50.43 to break the tape in the 4x100. Senior Haley Bloom, Cozzie, sophomore Emily Munson, and sophomore Igna Mendez went 4:25.24 to take top billing in the 4x400. Senior Joe Shilts, sophomore Cam Ray, sophomore Drew Robertson, and senior Nick Scherson followed with a track-capping 3:30 in the 4x400 relay.

Bloom (400 meters, 1:01.06), Robertson (800 meters, 1:57.85), and Shilts (400-meter hurdles, 58.00) rounded out the double winners on the track. First-year Lorenzo Freeman's 15.55 won the 110-meter hurdles, sophomore Daysia Hargrave went 1:10.85 to claim the 400-meter hurdles victory, and sophomore Mary Sirois helped secure the sweep of hurdles titles with a 15.99 in the 100-meter race.

Next, Wooster competes at the All-Ohio Championships, which are hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University on Saturday, April 15.
