Scots Deliver Big Efforts at Kenyon, Jesse Owens

Echo Kidd, Wooster Track & Field GAMBIER, Ohio - As championship season draws closer, The College of Wooster outdoor track and field program competed at the Duane Gomez Invitational, hosted by Kenyon College on Saturday. Wooster's women were seven of seven scoring teams with 132 points, while the men's 116 points ranked third of seven scoring teams.

Junior Daysia Hargrave competed in the Jesse Owens Classic down at Ohio State University this weekend and posted one of the program's top results. Hargrave lowered her own school record in the 100-meter hurdle by running a career-best 14.11 in the prelims, besting the previous mark by 0.16 seconds and moving into a tie for sixth nationally at the time of the meet. Hargrave then followed it up with a 14.28 time in the 100 hurdle finals.

At the Kenyon meet, Wooster collected six individual event victories and one relay win. Junior Echo Kidd dominated the field events for the men, winning both the long jump (21 feet, 5.25 inches) and the triple jump (season-best 43 feet, 3.75 inches). Kidd also placed fourth in the high jump (5 feet, 8.75 inches). Sophomore Evie Sanford put together a standout season-best performance of 127 feet, 2 inches to win the discus throw and 38 feet, 3.25 inches for third in the shot put. Senior Dylan Garretson rounded out the field event winners by clearing 15 feet in the pole vault.

On the track, senior Drew Patterson flew past the competition in the 100-meter dash, crossing the finish line in 12.86. Senior Athena Tharenos had the Scots' other individual event win in the 1,500-meter run in a time of 4:52.84. Meanwhile, the 4x100-meter relay team of junior Maia Doescher, sophomore Izzy Cozzie, first-year Claire Davis, and junior Igna Mendez won with a combined time of 51.37.

Davis, Mendez, and Cozzie all had stellar individual performances as well, each finishing as runner-up in their respective events. Davis logged a collegiate-best of 15 feet, 8.25 inches to place second in the long jump. Mendez put together a career-best 2:22.63 to be the runner-up in the 800-meter run and Cozzie placed second in the 200-meter dash in 27.06. One additional runner-up finish came from junior Isabelle Dwyer in the 5,000-meter run in a collegiate-best effort of 19:45.99. The 4x400 relay team of Cozzie, Tharenos, junior Emily Munson and Mendez capped off the day with a second-place finish in 4:18.60.

A number of season- and career-bests were set on the men's side as well, starting with senior Joe Shilts in the 400-meter hurdles. Shilts put together a collegiate-best 55.74 as the runner-up and led two fellow teammates in sophomore Jake George (1:02.88) and junior Vell Robinson (career-best 1:05.63) to fourth- and fifth-place finishes, respectively. In the 5,000 meters, junior Drew Robertson turned in a collegiate-best effort of 15:11.33 to place second while fellow junior Eric Johnson placed fifth in the same event in a season-best 15:53.85.

Junior Cam Ray took on the 800 meters run for the first time this season, placing fourth in a time of 2:02.11. First-year Nate Chartrand also placed fourth in the 400 meters in 52.30.

In relay action, the 4x100 relay team of first-year Will Harris II, junior Liam Regan, first-year Cooper Norwell, and sophomore Khaleel Manderson were the runner-up in 44.73. The 4x400 relay of Shilts, Ray, sophomore Zane DeMercurio, and Regan finished off the track events with a fourth-place finish in 3:41.08.

Host Kenyon scored 142 points to lead the men's standings, while Wittenberg University won the women's title with 158 points.

Wooster has its final tune-up before the NCAC Championships on Friday, April 26. Wooster is off to the Denison University Big Red Invitational, which starts at 12:30 p.m.
