Defiance Downs Wooster

Ella Biondi DEFIANCE -- Defiance College defeated The College of Wooster women's basketball team 66-40 on Sunday.

First-year Ella Biondi scored 12 points on 6-of-7 shooting and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Scots. Newcomer Shalen Guilliams came off the bench to score nine points, going 3-of-9 in 3-point range and grabbing six rebounds.

Namara Rwakatare scored eight points on 3-of-5 shooting and recorded a team-high three steals.

Two reached double figures in scoring for Defiance. Taylor Steinbrunner scored a game-high 15 points, and Taylor Day finished with 10 as both players came off the bench.

Wooster struggled out of the gate with just two points in the opening five minutes as Defiance started with an 8-2 run. Wooster scored its sixth point with two minutes left in the first to make it 12-6, but Defiance closed the quarter with a 6-0 run and started the second by scoring the first five points.

It took Wooster another two minutes to score its first basket of the second quarter as a layup from Biondi made it 23-8.

The newcomer Gulliams scored her first basket as a Fighting Scot to make it 27-11. All-in-all the second and third quarters were Wooster's best as they lost each by just three points.

Wooster trailed 31-16 at halftime and 45-27 after three quarters. 

They shot 28 percent (15-of-54) from the floor, 17 percent (5-of-29) from range and 63 percent (5-of-8) from the free throw line.

Defiance (4-5) shot 38 percent (26-of-68) from the floor, 26 percent (6-of-23) from 3-point territory and 80 percent (8-of-10) from the charity stripe.

Defiance also won the rebounding battle 51-33 and outscored Wooster's bench 41-18.

The Scots (1-9) will wrap up 2022 on Friday when they travel to Olivet College.
