Scots Figure It Out For Non-Conference Win

The College of Wooster women's basketball team had some ups and downs on Monday but a balanced team effort led them to a 68-55 win over Waynesburg University in a non-conference matchup.

First-year Ace Sturdivant led all scorers with 18 points, adding seven rebounds and five assists. Sophomore Ella Biondi recorded a 15-point, 10-rebound double-double, as did senior Alyssa Chritz who finished with 11 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

Senior Melissa Burtscher scored a career-high 10 points off the bench after going 2 of 4 from range. Erica Beaty scored a season-high eight points and Anna Hardink tied a season-high six points.

Waynesburg also had two record double-doubles as Kalisa Friday recorded 11 points, 10 rebounds and Julz Mohrbacher recorded 11 points, 11 rebounds.

The first half was a tale of two quarters as Wooster jumped out to a 22-7 lead after one quarter only to lead by four at halftime. Wooster, aided by a 10-0 run, led 15-1 seven minutes into the game.

Beaty scored six points in the first quarter to get the offense going, while Biondi ended the half with 15 points to her name.

Wooster shot 36 percent (8 of 22) in the first quarter before shooting just 18 percent (3 of 17) in the second. That allowed Waynesburg to get back into the game, opening the second quarter with their own 10-0 run.

Wooster recollected themselves after the media timeout thanks to a 3-pointer from Sturdivant and Wooster would lead 32-28 at halftime.

The Yellow Jackets inched closer after a 12-11 third quarter even tying the game at 38, but Wooster would put the game away with a 25-15 fourth quarter.

A 3-pointer from Burtscher started a 7-0 run that gave Wooster a 50-42 cushion of a lead and that lead only expanded to as many as 15.

Burtscher ended up scoring all her points in the second half, five in the third quarter and the other five in the fourth. It was the first time in her career where she reached double figures in scoring.

Both teams ended up shooting 31 percent from the floor, but Wooster was slightly better from beyond the arc (31 percent) and at the foul line (90 percent).

Wooster (4-12) won the rebounding battle 51-44 and collected 21 second chance points. Waynesburg (4-12) received 20 points from its bench.

Wooster will return to North Coast Athletic Conference play on Wednesday when they travel to Ohio Wesleyan University.
