The College of Wooster women's golf team competed against stiff competition to open up the 2017-18 season, and the Fighting Scots held their own with a seventh-place showing in a talented 13-team field at the Lynn Schweizer Invitational held at Denison Golf Club in Granville, Ohio over the weekend. Wooster shot a 698 for the 36-hole tournament.

Playing in rainy conditions on Saturday, Wooster, and the other 12 teams in the field, were just over halfway through the round before play was suspended, thus the field golfed the remaining holes of the 36-hole tournament on Sunday.

First-year Tongtong Wu led the way for the Fighting Scots on the weekend. The Shenzhen, China native carded an 86 over the opening 18, and followed that up with an 83 to tie for 18th-place at 169.

Sophomore Hannah Appleman did likewise in the score column with a three-stroke improvement between the rounds. Appleman opened with an 89 and then had an 86 on her card over the final 18 holes of play to finish at 175 and in a tie for 33rd-place.

Victoria Roney, Wooster's lone senior on the squad, had the biggest bounce-back between the rounds. Roney opened with a 94, but her 82 over Sunday's final 18 holes ranked as the Scots' best round of the tournament. Roney's 36-hole total of 176 placed her in a tie for 35th.

First-year Megan Gronau and sophomore Kaci Carpenter rounded out Wooster's lineup. Gronau opened her collegiate career with a 92, and her 89 over the final 18 holes of play gave the Scots a trio of student-athletes with a three-shot improvement between the rounds. Gronau's 181 placed her in a tie for 44th. Carpenter's 91 over the first 18 holes ranked as the Scots' third-best score for the opening round. Carpenter finished at 187 to tie for 53rd-place.

Four Scots competed as individuals in the tournament with first-year Devon Matson leading the quartet at 212, good for 78th-place.

North Coast Athletic Conference peer DePauw University edged out conference rival and national power Wittenberg University 637-642, while the Tigers' Jane Hopkinson-Wood's 148 beat out reining Div. III individual national champion and PING Women's Golf Coaches Association National Player of the Year Christina Herbert's 149 for medalist honors.

Next, Wooster heads to the Ohio Wesleyan University Fall Invitational at the Safari Golf Club in Powell, Ohio. Play commences on Saturday, Sept. 9.
