Wooster Takes Down Div. II Savannah State, 5-0

Maddie Moran, Wooster Golf SAVANNAH, Georgia – Dramatic finishes, dominant performances that led to early clinchers, and steady play down the stretch were all in the cards for The College of Wooster women's golf team, which swept NCAA Div. II Savannah State University 5-0 in Tuesday's match play event at Crosswinds Golf Club.

Melissa Burtscher had the hot putter late, draining birdies on holes 14 and 17, the latter of which clinched a 2-and-1 match over Jada McCallum in the top position. Burtscher's birdie at No. 14 bumped the junior's lead back to two, an advantage that was first achieved with a par on the par-5 12th hole. Burtscher took the lead for good with a par on the par-5 10th hole and never trailed in the match.

At No. 2, Ally Siewert warded off Saika Chariles over the final two holes for the 1-up victory. Siewert stepped in to the 17th tee box needing to at least halve the hole to extend the match, and did one better with a par. Chariles came in at bogey, tying the match up for the sixth time. Siewert's third shot on No. 18 rested about 18 feet from the pin, and the sophomore two-putted for par, while Chariles three-putted, giving the Scots' the 1-up victory in a match neither competitor led by multiple holes at any point.

Grace Lindgren raced out of the gates in the third match and was 4-up after five holes. The junior maintained a multi-hole lead the rest of the match before wrapping up the 4-and-3 victory with a par on hole 15. Two holes earlier, Lindgren carded one of two birdies on the day, and for good measure, the junior rolled in the second one after the match was already clinched.

Maddie Moran had the fifth match wrapped up after 13 holes. Momentum for Moran's eventual 7-and-5 victory started building on hole three, and four holes later, the sophomore was already 4-up. Moran's lead returned to 4-up at the turn before wins on holes 11 through 13 put the bow on the match.

Riley Thorr overcame a pair of 2-down deficits in an eventual 2-up win. Thorr bounced back with a par on hole three to pull within a hole, and then got the fourth position match back to all square on hole five. Thorr's par on hole 12 brought the senior back within a hole, and another par followed, tying up the match. Thorr's first lead of the day came on hole 17, then she was one stroke better than Angela Dodson on No. 18 to clinch the team shutout.

Wooster's spring trip continues for just over another week. A summary of all the courses the Scots had a practice or competition round at will be posted next week in advance of the northern spring opener at the University of Mount Union's Spring Invitational on March 25.
