History Made, as Fighting Scots Win For Fourth Time This Fall

Grace Lindgren, Wooster Golf SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – The College of Wooster women's golf team struck back, winning on archrival Wittenberg University's home course, and in doing so, made program history on Monday afternoon. Wooster's victory at the Wittenberg Fall Classic is the program's fourth tournament title this fall, marking the first time the Fighting Scots have captured four tournament crowns in a season. Wooster finished at 639, nine strokes clear of the College's North Coast Athletic Conference archrival.

Two weeks ago, it was Wittenberg edging out Wooster by a single stroke to claim top billing at the Eva Shorb Weiskopf Invitational at Wooster Country Club. This time, Wooster took charge from the start, with a three-stroke midway lead over the fierce rival growing to seven at the turn, and even more at the finish line. The Scots closed out the fall in style, with the team's 317 ranking as the fourth-lowest team round in program history, and Wooster also turned in the second-best round in the program annals within the last month.

Four Wooster scores were in the 70s at the event, and junior Ally Siewert signed for two of them. The junior's 156 was the runner-up score in the 48-competitor field. Siewert was immediately in the red on Sunday, rolling in a birdie on the par-4, 279-yard opening hole at Springfield Country Club. The junior turned at even par and was 1-over-par through 11 holes on Sunday. On Monday, Siewert fired off five straight pars spanning holes 11 through 15 and played both the back nine, which Wooster started on, and the front nine at 3-over-par.

Senior Grace Lindgren was next, with the fourth-place score 159. Lindgren matched Siewert for Wooster's lowest round of the tournament at 78, which came following an opening-day 81. Lindgren's birdie on the par-4, 308-yard 18th hole enabled the senior to turn at 1-over-par on Monday. She had a birdie on the par-4, 345-yard 11th hole and three consecutive pars followed. On Sunday, Lindgren caught fire midway through the round, playing holes five through nine at 2-under-par, with birdies on the par-5, 485-yard fifth hole and the par-4, 305-year eighth hole.

Senior Melissa Burtscher's steady play resulted in another top-five finish. Burtscher shot 160, with a low round of 79 coming on Monday. Burtscher's play down the stretch secured the win, as the senior played the final six holes at 1-under-par. Burtscher rolled in back-to-back birdies at the par-5, 488-yard fifth hole and the par-4, 280-yard sixth hole on Monday. Burtscher was 5-over-par for the tournament on the front nine.

First-year Morgan Erdmann's 164 rounded out the scorers. Erdmann placed 13th with rounds of 83 and 81. Erdmann delivered a strong closing stretch on Sunday, playing the back nine at 2-over-par. Erdmann's first birdie of the tourney came at the par-4, 342-yard 12th hole, and another followed not long after at the par-4, 301-yard 15th hole. In round two, the back nine was again where Erdmann shined, this time playing that stretch at 3-over-par. Erdmann logged three birdies and six pars in the final round.

First-year Abby Haywood delivered another solid week, finishing in 17th-place at 169. Haywood had rounds of 84 and 85. The left-hander started a run of four straight pars on Sunday on the par-5, 433-yard fourth hole and had four more pars on the back nine. Haywood's first birdie of the fall finale came on the par-4, 345-yard 11th hole on Monday, and the first-year scored five pars in the round.

Wittenberg finished at 648. DePauw University's Becky Williams was the medalist at 154.

Wooster previously won the University of Mount Union Fall Invitational, the Westfield Invitational, and the John Carroll University Fall Invitational. The win at Wittenberg broke a tie with the 2018-19 and 2021-22 teams for most titles in a season. In head-to-head competition, Wooster went 43-12, which included a near-unblemished 40-1 run over the final five events of the season.

Wooster's spring season starts in mid-March.
