Scots Down Gators for First Win of 2021

MEADVILLE, Pa. – The College of Wooster women's lacrosse team tallied its first win of the season Saturday after defeating Allegheny College 19-11.

Three players for the Scots, Alexa Mellis, Jill Murray and Hannah Shaw, scored four goals each and combined to surpass the goal total of the Gators.

Senior Ashley Boersma helped the cause with a game-high four assists and added two goals. Her six points tied her with Shaw for the team lead.

Katie Harvey and Miura Wiley each added a pair of goals, while Anna Truong collected one. Britta Treu finished with two assists.

Harvey led the team with six ground balls. Shaw totaled 12 draw controls and three caused turnovers, while Wiley added six draw controls herself.

Senior Katie Shideler played the majority of the game in net, making 16 saves and allowing nine goals to collect the win. CC Dent allowed the other two goals and made two saves in just over nine minutes of action.

Allegheny was led by four goals from Senna Perelman.

Mellis started the game with a goal within the first 31 seconds. Perelman answered, but Shaw and Harvey scored back-to-back in a span of 11 seconds for Wooster to go u 3-1.

Allegheny tied it at three before a five-goal run from the Scots. Murray scored her first two goals in that span and later scored as time expired in the half to give Wooster a 10-6 lead.

Wooster increased its lead by four in the second half. Shaw started the half with a player-up goal off an assist from Boersma.

Truong scored her lone goal off a free position shot to make it 15-9. Mellis, Boersma and Harvey scored the game's final three goals to put the Gators away.

Wooster was successful on 22-of-31 draw controls. Allegheny totaled 34 ground balls to Wooster's 32, but the Scots outshot the Gators 44-40.

Both teams move to 1-1 on the year.
